Chapter 2 - What the Walls Heard.

Daniel did not react to Emily's warning immediately.
He had learned long ago that the first response to a dangerous truth should never be noise.
Noise gave frightened people something to hide behind.
Silence forced them to fill the empty space.
Ryan filled it first.
"She's medicated."
Emily's eyes snapped toward him.
Daniel turned.
"Medicated with what?"
Ryan hesitated.
"Something her doctor gave her."
"Name it."
Ryan looked toward Linda.
Linda answered.
"For sleep."
Daniel's face remained still.
"Name it."
Linda's lips tightened.
"I don't remember the name."
The knock at the front door sounded a third time.
Daniel pressed the remote again.
A second chirp sounded.
The security lock released.
Moments later, voices moved through the apartment.
Ryan backed toward the wall.
Two uniformed city officers entered the bedroom first.
Behind them came Captain Nora Hayes, a military family liaison Daniel had known for twelve years.
She was not there because Daniel wanted rank to solve a private problem.
She was there because he wanted a witness who would not be intimidated by his own anger.
A paramedic followed her carrying a medical bag.
Linda's expression hardened.
"This is ridiculous."
Captain Hayes looked at the bed.
Her expression changed.
"Ma'am, step away from her."
Linda stared at her.
"I'm her mother-in-law."
"Then you can step away while the medic checks her."
Ryan raised both hands.
"Nobody touched her."
One city officer, Malik Turner, looked at him.
"Nobody asked you that yet."
Ryan lowered his hands.
Daniel moved beside Emily.
"Can they examine you?"
Emily's eyes stayed on him.
"Don't let Ryan leave."
"He won't."
"Don't let Linda call anyone."
Daniel glanced toward Officer Turner.
Turner nodded and asked Linda to place her phone on the dresser.
Linda laughed once.
"You people have lost your minds."
"Phone," Turner repeated.
Linda handed it over.
Ryan slowly removed his own phone.
Before placing it down, the screen lit up.
Daniel saw a message preview.
DON'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE OFFICE.
The message was from a contact saved only as M.
Ryan flipped the phone over too late.
Officer Turner saw it too.
"Who's M?"
Ryan's jaw tightened.
"My manager."
"What office?"
"Work."
Emily made a sound from the bed.
Not a word.
Something between a breath and a laugh.
Daniel looked at her.
"What?"
Emily stared at Ryan.
"He doesn't have a manager named M."
Ryan stepped forward.
"Emily."
Captain Hayes blocked him.
"Stay there."
The paramedic, Jenna Ruiz, knelt beside the bed.
She spoke to Emily gently, asking permission before every movement.
Emily flinched when Jenna touched her ribs.
Daniel's fingers curled at his sides.
He forced them open.
"How far along are you?" Jenna asked.
"Thirty-two weeks."
"Any pain in your abdomen?"
Emily nodded.
"Since yesterday."
Ryan shook his head.
"She never said that."
Emily looked at him.
"You told me not to."
The words landed harder than shouting could have.
Linda's face sharpened.
"That is not what happened."
Emily turned toward the wall.
Jenna checked her blood pressure.
Then she looked at Daniel.
"She needs the hospital."
Ryan moved again.
"I'll drive her."
Officer Turner almost smiled.
"No."
Ryan's fear became irritation.
"I'm her husband."
Emily whispered from the bed.
"Not tonight."
Daniel looked down at her.
Emily was crying silently now.
"Dad, take the lamp off the wall."
Everyone looked at the bedside lamp.
It was fixed to a small wooden panel above the nightstand.
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
"Please."
Captain Hayes moved closer.
"Is something behind it?"
Emily nodded.
Ryan's face lost color.
"There's nothing behind that lamp."
Daniel looked at him.
"You seem very sure."
Ryan said nothing.
Officer Turner retrieved a screwdriver from the maintenance pouch attached to the paramedic's rolling case.
He removed the two screws holding the lamp panel.
The panel pulled away from the wall.
Behind it was a narrow cavity.
Inside sat a white charging cable, a tiny digital recorder, and an old cell phone wrapped in a plastic bag.
Linda stared at Emily.
"What have you done?"
Emily's entire body tensed.
Daniel stepped between Linda and the bed.
"You speak to me now."
Linda's eyes flashed.
"She has been spying on my family."
Emily whispered.
"I was trying to prove I wasn't imagining it."
Daniel looked at the recorder.
Captain Hayes picked it up carefully using a clean glove from Jenna's medical kit.
"How long has this been here?"
"Six weeks."
"What is on it?"
Emily swallowed.
"Arguments."
Ryan stared at the device.
"Those recordings are illegal."
Officer Turner raised an eyebrow.
"Interesting priority."
Ryan glared at him.
Daniel asked Emily the question he did not want answered.
"What else?"
Emily looked at Linda.
"Them talking when they thought I was asleep."
Linda laughed again, but the sound was thinner.
"Talking about what?"
Emily's gaze moved back to her father.
"My baby."
Daniel's chest tightened.
"What about the baby?"
Emily took a slow breath.
"Ryan said once the baby was born, everything would be easier."
"What does that mean?"
"I didn't know."
Ryan interrupted.
"Because it means nothing."
Emily's voice grew steadier.
"Then I heard Linda say they only needed me cooperative until the papers were signed."
Daniel looked at Linda.
"What papers?"
Linda's face went blank.
"She's inventing things."
Emily's hand moved toward the old phone.
"It's on there."
Captain Hayes opened the plastic bag enough to inspect the device without touching the screen.
The phone was cracked and outdated.
"Why use this?"
Emily answered.
"Ryan checked my regular phone every night."
Ryan scoffed.
"I did not."
Emily looked at Officer Turner.
"Ask him for my passcode."
Turner turned to Ryan.
"What's her passcode?"
Ryan answered before thinking.
"0427."
The room went still.
Emily's eyes closed.
Ryan realized his mistake.
"We're married."
"That was not the question," Turner said.
Jenna prepared Emily for transport.
Daniel bent closer.
"You're going to the hospital."
Emily caught his sleeve.
"The recorder first."
"It can come with us."
"No."
Her urgency startled him.
"Play the last file."
Ryan stepped forward so abruptly that both officers moved.
"No."
That was the first time he raised his voice.
Daniel's eyes locked on him.
"Why?"
Ryan looked around the room as though searching for an answer hanging in the air.
"Because this is insane."
Captain Hayes studied the recorder.
"Colonel, we should preserve it."
Daniel nodded.
Emily squeezed his sleeve harder.
"Please."
Captain Hayes looked toward Officer Turner.
He considered it, then said they could listen without deleting or altering anything while body cameras documented the handling.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then came Linda's voice.
It was faint but unmistakable.
"She signs on Monday."
Ryan's recorded voice answered.
"What if she refuses?"
Linda said something too quiet to catch.
A chair scraped.
Then Ryan spoke again.
"And after the delivery?"
Linda's recorded voice became clear.
"After the delivery, she won't be able to stop us."
Emily began shaking.
Daniel stared at Linda.
The recording continued.
A third voice entered.
A man's voice.
Older.
Calm.
"You're both forgetting the most important part."
Ryan's eyes dropped to the floor.
Linda whispered.
"Turn it off."
Nobody moved.
Before the next words came through the recorder, Emily pressed her fingertips against her lips as though she could physically hold back a memory.
Daniel saw Captain Hayes glance at her and then lower the speaker volume by one notch.
Nobody wanted the device to become another thing happening to Emily without her control.
Officer Turner asked whether she wanted it stopped.
Emily shook her head.
"No."
Her voice was weak, but the decision inside it was not.
"I hid it because I wanted someone else to hear what I heard."
Ryan stared at the recorder as if it had betrayed him.
Linda stared at Emily.
Daniel noticed the difference.
Ryan feared evidence.
Linda feared the person who had preserved it.
Emily had spent weeks pretending not to notice conversations, memorizing footsteps, and waiting until the apartment was empty before checking batteries.
The courage of that small routine landed on Daniel all at once.
His daughter had been conducting her own quiet rescue long before she called him.
The unknown man continued.
"Colonel Mercer can never learn who actually owns the trust."
Daniel felt the room tilt around a sentence he did not understand.
Captain Hayes paused the recording.
Daniel looked at Emily.
"What trust?"
Emily stared at him through tears.
"Dad, that's why I called you."
She took one shaking breath.
