CHAPTER 7 The Woman Who Returned From the Dead

CHAPTER 7 The Woman Who Returned From the Dead
Theodore Vale ran back into the mansion.
He didn’t remember opening the front doors.
He didn’t remember crossing the marble hallway.

All he remembered was Rosalie’s voice.
She’s inside the mansion.
Those four words had changed everything.
Because for seventeen years, Theodore had been told his mother was gone.
Now she was somewhere inside the house where they had grown up.
Alive.
Watching.
Waiting.
Theodore reached the second floor and stopped.
The hallway was empty.
Too empty.
The kind of empty that felt wrong.
“Rosalie?”
No answer.
He moved faster.
“Rosalie!”
Then he heard something.
A quiet sound coming from the old east wing.
A woman crying.
Theodore followed the voice.
When he reached the old locked room, the door was open.
Inside, Rosalie stood near the desk.
And beside her was a woman.
An older woman with long dark hair.
A woman whose face Theodore had only seen in photographs.
Theodore stopped breathing.
The woman turned around.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Theodore.”
His entire body froze.
No one had said his name that way before.
Not with that much pain.
Not with that much love.
He stared at her.
“You’re…”
The woman stepped forward.
“I know.”
“No.”
Theodore shook his head.
“No, this isn’t possible.”
Her tears fell.
“I know what they told you.”
“Everyone said you died.”
“I know.”
“You let me believe that.”
The woman looked down.
“I had no choice.”
Theodore laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says that.”
The woman closed her eyes.
Because she knew she deserved his anger.
Rosalie moved between them.
“Theo.”
He looked at his sister.
“You knew?”
She shook her head.
“Not until recently.”
Theodore looked back at the woman.
“Who are you really?”
The woman whispered:
“Isabella.”
His mother.
The name felt impossible.
Like a memory from someone else’s life.
“I wanted to come back.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
Her expression broke.
“Because I thought they would kill you.”
Theodore’s anger faded slightly.
Not completely.
But enough to listen.
“Who?”
Isabella looked toward the hallway.
“Your father.”
Theodore froze.
“What?”
“He wasn’t the man you believed he was.”
Rosalie stepped closer.
“What happened?”
Isabella looked at both of them.
Then she spoke.
“Your father discovered that the Vale family fortune was built on a secret.”
She walked toward the old desk.
“He discovered that his father had hidden another heir.”
Theodore remembered Julian.
His supposed brother.
“Julian.”
Isabella nodded.
“Yes.”
Rosalie looked confused.
“Why was he hidden?”
“Because your grandfather believed only one child could inherit everything.”
Isabella touched the old photograph.
“So he erased Julian from the family.”
Theodore frowned.
“But why hide me?”
Isabella looked at him.
“Because Julian wasn’t the only secret.”
Sebastian entered the room.
Everyone turned.
His expression was unreadable.
But Theodore noticed something.
Sebastian was not surprised to see Isabella.
He already knew.
Theodore’s anger returned.
“You knew she was here.”
Sebastian didn’t deny it.
“Yes.”
Rosalie looked at him.
“You knew?”
Sebastian remained silent.
Theodore stepped forward.
“How long?”
Sebastian looked at Isabella.
Then back at Theodore.
“Years.”
Theodore’s face changed.
“You knew my mother was alive for years?”
“I was protecting you.”
“No.”
Theodore’s voice became louder.
“You were protecting the family name.”
Sebastian looked hurt.
But he didn’t argue.
Because maybe there was truth in those words.
A sudden sound came from downstairs.
Glass breaking.
Everyone froze.
Sebastian immediately reacted.
“Stay here.”
Theodore almost smiled.
“Still giving orders?”
Sebastian ignored him.
“I’m serious.”
They moved toward the staircase.
Then the lights went out.
A shadow crossed the hallway.
Isabella grabbed Theodore’s arm.
“Don’t go.”
Her voice was full of fear.
Theodore looked at her.
“Why?”
She whispered:
“Because I know who it is.”
A figure appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
Slowly walking upward.
Sebastian stepped forward.
“Show yourself.”
The person stopped.
Then a familiar voice answered.
“You always did think you were the hero.”
Theodore recognized the voice.
Eleanor.
She stepped into the light.
But she was not alone.
Standing beside her was another person.
A man Theodore had never seen before.
A man holding a folder.
Sebastian’s face changed.
“No.”
Eleanor smiled.
“You finally understand.”
Theodore looked between them.
“What is happening?”
Eleanor opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Birth records.
Financial papers.
Medical reports.
She placed them on the table.
“You wanted the truth.”
She looked directly at Theodore.
“Now you’re going to get it.”
Rosalie picked up the first document.
Her face immediately turned pale.
“What is this?”
Eleanor answered calmly.
“Proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Eleanor looked at Theodore.
“That Theodore Vale…”
She paused.
“Was never Sebastian’s brother.”
The room went silent.
Theodore stared at her.
“What?”
Eleanor continued.
“You were adopted.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Theodore looked at Sebastian.
Waiting for him to deny it.
But Sebastian didn’t.
And that hurt more than the accusation.
Theodore’s voice became almost a whisper.
“Is it true?”
Sebastian closed his eyes.
A painful silence passed.
Then he answered.
“Yes.”
Theodore stepped back.
His entire world collapsed again.
But Eleanor wasn’t finished.
She picked up another document.
“And that is not the biggest secret.”
She placed it in front of him.
Theodore looked down.
His hands began shaking.
Because the document contained one name.
The name of his biological father.
And it was not a Vale.
It was someone who had been standing beside them all along.
Someone they trusted.
Someone who knew everything.
Eleanor looked at him.
“The person who destroyed this family…”
She whispered.
May you like
“Is your real father.”
