CHAPTER 14 The Journal That Changed Everything

The scream echoed through the tunnel.

It was sharp.

Brief.

Then silence returned.

Complete silence.

Theodore's heart pounded as darkness swallowed the narrow passage.

“Rosalie!”

“I’m here!”

Her voice came from somewhere to his left.

Sebastian switched on his flashlight.

A thin beam of light cut through the darkness.

Alexander stood with his pistol raised.

His eyes never left the tunnel behind them.

“Keep moving,” he ordered.

“They’re close.”

Another gunshot echoed through the passage.

This one struck the stone wall above them.

Fragments of rock rained onto the floor.

Claire instinctively ducked.

“They’re trying to trap us.”

Alexander nodded.

“They don't want us dead.”

Theodore looked at him.

“How do you know?”

Alexander answered without taking his eyes off the tunnel.

“Because if Victor wanted us dead, we’d already be dead.”

The realization chilled everyone.

Victor wanted something else.

He wanted Theodore alive.

The group hurried deeper into the hidden passage.

After several minutes, they reached an underground chamber unlike anything Theodore had imagined.

The room was enormous.

Ancient stone columns supported the ceiling.

Rows of metal cabinets stretched into the shadows.

Dust covered everything.

Claire slowly looked around.

“So this place really exists.”

Alexander lowered his weapon.

“My father called it the Vault.”

Rosalie walked toward one of the cabinets.

“There must be hundreds of files.”

“There are.”

Alexander nodded.

“My father documented everything.”

Sebastian looked around carefully.

“Then Victor will come here.”

Alexander met his brother’s eyes.

“That’s exactly why he could never find it.”

Claire placed the leather journal on a large wooden table.

Theodore stared at the cover.

The inscription still echoed in his mind.

To my son, Theodore.

He looked at Claire.

“You said someone named Gabriel Cross wrote this.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“Who was he?”

Claire took a slow breath.

“He was an investigative journalist.”

Daniel frowned.

“I knew that name.”

Claire looked at him.

“Most people did.”

“He disappeared eighteen years ago.”

Claire nodded again.

“Officially.”

Theodore stepped closer.

“What really happened?”

Claire looked directly at him.

“He uncovered evidence that connected powerful families, judges, corporations, and politicians through one secret financial network.”

Sebastian’s expression darkened.

“The Consortium.”

Claire looked surprised.

“You know about them?”

Alexander answered before she could.

“I spent years hiding from them.”

Rosalie carefully opened the journal.

The pages were worn.

Filled with handwritten notes.

Maps.

Names.

Dates.

Pieces of a much larger puzzle.

Then something slipped from between two pages.

A faded photograph.

Theodore picked it up.

It showed a younger Gabriel Cross.

Standing beside Isabella.

Holding a newborn baby.

Theodore looked closer.

The baby wore a tiny silver bracelet.

Engraved on it was one word.

Theodore.

His breathing slowed.

“That’s me.”

Isabella gently nodded.

“Yes.”

Theodore looked at her.

“You knew Gabriel.”

Tears formed in her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Who was he to you?”

She hesitated.

Long enough for Theodore to realize the answer would change everything.

Finally, she whispered,

“He saved your life.”

Alexander slowly lowered his head.

“I hoped you would never have to hear this.”

Theodore turned toward him.

“Hear what?”

Alexander walked to the table.

He looked at the old photograph.

Then at Theodore.

“I adopted you.”

The room became still.

Theodore didn’t react.

He simply listened.

Alexander continued.

“Gabriel Cross came to me carrying a six-month-old baby.”

He looked into Theodore’s eyes.

“You.”

“He told me people were hunting your family.”

“He believed you would be safer if no one knew who you really were.”

Rosalie covered her mouth.

“So Theodore isn't related to the Vales by blood.”

Alexander shook his head.

“No.”

“But from the first day I held him…”

He smiled sadly.

“He became my son.”

Theodore looked away.

His emotions collided inside him.

Anger.

Confusion.

Relief.

Grief.

Nothing made sense anymore.

Claire reached into her backpack once more.

“There’s something else.”

She removed a sealed envelope.

Its paper had turned yellow with age.

The front read:

Only Theodore may open this.

His hands trembled as he broke the seal.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

The first line immediately caught his attention.

Theodore, if you are reading this, then I failed to come back for you.

The handwriting matched the journal.

Gabriel Cross.

Theodore continued reading silently.

I never wanted you to inherit my fight.

I wanted you to have an ordinary life.

But Victor Hale will never stop searching for you.

Not because of money.

Not because of the Vale name.

But because of what only you can prove.

Theodore looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Claire answered quietly.

“I don’t know.”

“That page was missing when I found the journal.”

Suddenly, the lights inside the Vault flickered.

Daniel rushed toward the security panel.

His face immediately changed.

“They’re here.”

Sebastian grabbed his flashlight.

“How many?”

Daniel looked at the monitor.

“At least twelve.”

Alexander raised his pistol again.

“They found the entrance faster than I expected.”

A loud metallic boom echoed through the chamber.

The main security door shook violently.

Another impact followed.

Then another.

Victor’s team was breaking through.

Claire looked around desperately.

“There has to be another exit.”

Alexander nodded.

“There is.”

“Where?”

He pointed toward the far wall.

Behind an old family crest.

Sebastian pressed against the stone emblem.

Nothing happened.

Rosalie noticed something carved beneath it.

Three symbols.

A raven.

A key.

A compass.

Claire’s eyes widened.

“I’ve seen those before.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“Where?”

She slowly held up Gabriel Cross’s journal.

“The same symbols are on the last page.”

Theodore quickly opened the journal.

The final page contained only one sentence.

When the raven faces east, the true heir will open the final door.

Before anyone could figure out what it meant, the steel security door exploded inward.

Smoke filled the chamber.

Dark figures rushed inside.

At their center walked Victor Hale.

Calm.

Confident.

Untouched by the chaos around him.

He smiled at Theodore.

Then he quietly said,

May you like

“It’s time you came home.”
