CHAPTER 15 The Final Door Opens

CHAPTER 15 The Final Door Opens

Smoke rolled across the stone floor.

The explosion left a cloud of dust hanging beneath the ancient ceiling.

Victor Hale walked through it without hesitation.

His dark suit was untouched.

His silver cane clicked softly against the stone.

Behind him stood a dozen armed men.

None of them spoke.

None of them needed to.

Their presence alone was enough.

Theodore stepped in front of Rosalie.

Alexander raised his pistol.

Sebastian moved to Theodore's side.

No one was willing to retreat.

Victor smiled.

"There you are."

His eyes never left Theodore.

"I've been looking for you for a very long time."

Theodore's voice was steady.

"You finally found me."

Victor nodded.

"And you finally found the Vault."

Alexander aimed the pistol directly at Victor.

"Take one more step."

Victor didn't even slow down.

"You won't shoot."

Alexander's finger tightened around the trigger.

"You seem very confident."

Victor stopped only a few feet away.

"I've known you for almost thirty years."

His smile faded.

"You always protect people."

Alexander's expression remained cold.

"And you always use them."

For a brief moment, neither man blinked.

The tension between them filled the chamber.

Then Victor quietly raised one hand.

His guards lowered their weapons.

Everyone in the room looked confused.

Sebastian frowned.

"What are you doing?"

Victor answered calmly.

"I didn't come here for a fight."

Rosalie stared at him.

"You buried me alive."

Victor shook his head.

"I kept you hidden."

Rosalie's eyes flashed with anger.

"You almost killed me."

"I prevented someone else from finishing the job."

No one knew whether to believe him.

Claire stepped closer to Theodore.

She whispered,

"He's buying time."

Theodore nodded almost imperceptibly.

He had reached the same conclusion.

Victor wasn't afraid.

He was waiting.

Waiting for something.

Or someone.

Victor slowly looked around the Vault.

"So."

"The famous family archive."

He smiled at Alexander.

"You protected it well."

Alexander answered,

"Not well enough."

Victor shrugged.

"It no longer matters."

He pointed toward the old family crest carved into the wall.

"Because the only thing I came for..."

"...is behind that door."

Everyone looked toward the stone crest.

The raven.

The key.

The compass.

The symbols from Gabriel Cross's journal.

Victor turned back to Theodore.

"Open it."

Theodore didn't move.

"I don't know how."

Victor smiled again.

"You do."

"You just don't realize it yet."

Claire quickly opened Gabriel's journal again.

She turned to the final page.

"There has to be something we missed."

Rosalie examined the faded ink.

Then she noticed something unusual.

"The writing isn't complete."

Claire looked closer.

"What do you mean?"

Rosalie held the page beneath one of the emergency lights.

Faint lettering appeared beneath the original message.

Invisible ink.

Everyone leaned closer.

The hidden sentence slowly became readable.

Only blood freely given may reveal the truth.

Sebastian frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Alexander immediately understood.

"The lock isn't mechanical."

Claire looked at Theodore.

"It's biometric."

Victor smiled.

"Exactly."

Theodore slowly approached the stone crest.

His heart pounded.

He had no idea what waited behind the hidden door.

But somehow, every path had led him here.

He reached toward the carved raven.

Nothing happened.

Alexander suddenly remembered something.

"The bracelet."

Everyone looked at him.

"The silver bracelet Gabriel gave Theodore."

Claire quickly searched through her backpack.

"I have it."

She carefully removed a tiny silver bracelet wrapped in cloth.

The engraving remained perfectly clear.

THEODORE.

She handed it to him.

Theodore slipped it onto his wrist.

The moment the bracelet touched his skin, a soft metallic click echoed through the chamber.

The raven rotated.

The compass shifted.

The stone key slid downward.

Then the entire wall began to move.

Ancient gears groaned deep inside the stone.

Dust filled the air.

A narrow doorway slowly opened.

Behind it was a small circular chamber.

Not a vault of gold.

Not stacks of cash.

Only a single wooden table.

And resting on it...

...was a sealed metal case.

Victor's calm expression disappeared for the first time.

"There it is."

Before anyone could move, Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

"I'll get it."

Alexander grabbed his arm.

"No."

But it was too late.

Daniel crossed the threshold.

The moment his foot touched the floor inside the chamber...

A sharp alarm sounded.

Red lights flashed overhead.

Steel barriers slammed down behind him.

Daniel spun around.

"No!"

He was trapped inside.

The metal case remained only a few feet away.

Victor quietly sighed.

"I warned you."

Daniel looked desperately at Alexander.

"Help me!"

Alexander rushed toward the barrier.

It wouldn't move.

Claire searched the journal frantically.

"There has to be another way!"

Rosalie noticed a small digital display lighting up beside the chamber.

A countdown appeared.

05:00

Theodore's heart skipped.

"What is that?"

Alexander's face turned pale.

"A security protocol."

"What happens when it reaches zero?"

Alexander answered without taking his eyes off Daniel.

"The chamber seals permanently."

Daniel slammed both hands against the transparent barrier.

"You have to get me out!"

Victor calmly adjusted his cufflinks.

"No."

Everyone turned toward him.

Victor looked directly at Theodore.

"You have exactly five minutes."

He pointed toward the sealed metal case.

"Choose."

"The evidence..."

"...or the man."

The countdown changed.

04:59

Theodore realized the truth.

This had never been about the Vault.

It had never been about money.

Victor had designed one final test.

Not to discover who the rightful heir was.

But to discover...

May you like

What kind of man Theodore would become.
