Chapter 3: A New Beginning
Months passed.
Leah accepted a position leading the Sinclair Foundation's Community Outreach Division.
Rather than working from an executive office, she spent most of her time visiting schools, shelters, hospitals, and senior centers.
She insisted every grant application be reviewed by people who had firsthand experience serving their communities.
Margaret often accompanied her.
Together they visited small organizations that had never received attention from wealthy donors.
One afternoon, a young volunteer asked Leah,
"How did someone like you end up running one of the biggest foundations in New York?"
Leah smiled.
"I didn't earn this because I knew the right people."
She glanced toward Margaret.
"I earned it because, for one moment, I forgot to care about status."

Nathan watched from across the room.
