Chapter 3: Secrets Behind Marble Walls

Chapter 3: Secrets Behind Marble Walls
Evelyn scheduled a discreet visit with Dr. Nathan Brooks, the family's longtime pediatric specialist.
Officially, it was a routine wellness examination.
Unofficially, she needed another opinion.
Dr. Brooks completed the examination without speaking.
When he gently rotated the baby's shoulder, additional bruises became visible beneath the ones Evelyn had documented.
His face hardened.
"How old are these?"
"Some are recent," Evelyn answered quietly. "Others appear several days older."
The doctor nodded grimly.
"They weren't caused by normal infant care."
Just then, Isabella entered the examination room.
"I thought I canceled this appointment."
Dr. Brooks stood.
"You requested cancellation."
"I declined."
She folded her arms.
"You're making unnecessary accusations."
"No," he replied calmly.
"I'm documenting medical evidence."
For the first time in years, someone had challenged Isabella without fear of losing their job.
She looked toward Sebastian, who had just arrived after being summoned by security.
"This is ridiculous," she insisted. "Tell them."
Sebastian didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at his son's bruised arm.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at the doctor.
Finally, he asked the question Isabella never expected.
"What exactly are you suggesting?"
Dr. Brooks met his eyes.

"I'm saying this child may be the victim of physical abuse."
The room fell completely silent.
