Chapter 1: The Cry That Shattered the Ballroom

Chapter 1: The Cry That Shattered the Ballroom

The orchestra never missed a note.

As strings floated beneath the crystal chandeliers, Isabella Vance smiled for another photograph, gently rocking the infant in her arms. The flashbulbs immortalized perfection—America's newest power family standing untouched above the ordinary world.

Then the baby began to cry.

It started softly, barely audible beneath the music. Isabella instinctively tightened her grip, forcing another elegant smile as guests continued sipping champagne.

"Shh," she whispered through clenched teeth. "Not now."

The infant only cried louder.

A nearby socialite exchanged a knowing glance with another woman. Across the room, Sebastian Vance looked up from a conversation with investors. He didn't speak. He simply watched.

That was enough.

Isabella felt her stomach twist. Sebastian's silence was always worse than criticism. His expression remained unreadable, but she knew exactly what he was thinking.

Control your son.

Maintain the image.

She excused herself with practiced grace and disappeared into a private lounge adjoining the ballroom. The moment the doors closed behind her, the smile vanished.

"What is wrong with you?" she hissed at the infant.

The baby screamed harder.

She bounced him impatiently, adjusted his blanket, checked the expensive designer bottle waiting nearby. Nothing worked.

Her breathing became uneven.

Outside, the gala continued flawlessly.

Inside, perfection was unraveling.

The cries echoed through the room until frustration overwhelmed reason.

"Enough!"

Without thinking, Isabella gripped the baby's tiny arm more tightly than she intended.

The infant cried out in pain.

Silence followed.

Not from the child.

From Isabella herself.

She stared at the faint red marks forming on his delicate skin. Her heart skipped.

"No... no..."

A soft knock interrupted her panic.

"Mrs. Vance?" the nanny called from outside. "Everything alright?"

Isabella quickly covered the baby's arm with the blanket.

"He's fine," she answered, forcing calm into her voice. "Just overtired."

She opened the door with another flawless smile.

No one noticed her trembling hands.

Except one person.

Standing at the far end of the hallway was Evelyn Carter, the estate's newly hired pediatric nurse. She had only worked for the Vance family for three days, but years in children's hospitals had taught her to recognize fear.

And she had just seen it on a mother's face.
