Chapter 2: Marks No Blanket Could Hide
The following morning, the estate returned to its carefully choreographed routine.
Staff members moved silently through marble corridors while Isabella prepared for an exclusive magazine interview celebrating "The Perfect Modern Family."
Evelyn entered the nursery carrying the baby's morning bottle.
When she lifted the infant to change his clothes, the blanket slipped away.
She froze.
Small bruises circled the baby's upper arm.
Not accidental.
Not medical.
Finger-shaped.
Years of pediatric emergency work had burned that pattern into her memory.
She carefully photographed the injuries with the secure medical documentation app required by her nursing license.
Her pulse quickened.
She didn't want to believe what she was seeing.
Perhaps there was another explanation.
As she continued the examination, she noticed something else.
The baby flinched every time an adult hand reached suddenly toward him.
Healthy infants startled.
Traumatized infants anticipated.
There was a difference.
Later that afternoon, Isabella entered the nursery wearing another immaculate designer dress.
"How does he look?" she asked casually.
"Healthy overall," Evelyn replied carefully.
She paused.
"But I'm concerned about the bruising on his arm."
For one fraction of a second, Isabella's expression cracked.
Then it disappeared.
"Oh, that?" she laughed lightly. "He's surprisingly strong. Probably grabbed himself while I was changing him."
Evelyn knew babies that age couldn't produce bruises like those.
Still, she simply nodded.
"I'd like the pediatrician to examine him."
Isabella's smile vanished.
"That won't be necessary."
"It is standard procedure."
"I said no."
The room became silent.
When Isabella walked away, Evelyn looked down at the child sleeping peacefully in her arms.

She whispered only four words.
"I won't ignore this."
