Chapter 2 – The Truth Begins to Surface

Emily struggled to process what she had just heard.
"My adoptive parents always told me I was left anonymously at a church," she said quietly.
Margaret shook her head.
"My sister, Rebecca, never stopped searching for her daughter. Every birthday she bought a small butterfly charm because it was the symbol embroidered on the baby's hospital blanket."
Daniel asked the question everyone was thinking.
"Is Rebecca still alive?"
Margaret nodded.
"She lives quietly in Oregon. She never recovered from losing her child."
Emily wasn't ready to believe any of it.
"A birthmark isn't proof."
Margaret agreed.
"You're right."
She reached into her purse and handed Daniel an old photograph.
It showed a young Rebecca holding a newborn wrapped in a blanket embroidered with tiny butterflies.
The baby's shoulder showed the exact same butterfly-shaped birthmark.
