Chapter 6 - The Watch That Changed Hands.

Nobody in the conference room spoke for several seconds after Detective Kim turned Ethan's watch over and read the inscription engraved by his father more than a decade earlier.
Dean Harrow recovered first, which Claire would later realize was one of his greatest talents because panic only reached him after he had decided what version of the truth he intended to sell.
“Ethan gave me that watch.”
Ethan stared at him.
“I did not.”
Dean's expression remained composed.
“You handed it to me in the groom's lounge before the ceremony because the clasp was loose and you were afraid of losing it.”
“That never happened.”
“Then perhaps you do not remember.”
Claire watched Ethan's hands close into fists at his sides.
“I remember the last ten minutes before I was supposed to marry the woman I love.”
Dean looked toward Claire for the first time.
“Stress changes memory.”
Claire almost laughed.
“So does lying.”
Detective Kim placed the watch in an evidence bag and asked Dean to remain available while another officer contacted the venue for video from the groom's lounge.
The attorney objected, cited client privilege twice, and finally stopped talking when Detective Kim reminded him that privilege did not apply to a stolen watch or a missing child-related witness.
Twenty-three minutes later, police located Vanessa Pike at the motel Lucas had named.
She was frightened, exhausted, and furious when officers brought her to the hospital because she believed Lucas had promised to keep her location secret until she could speak to an attorney.
Lucas looked at the floor when she passed him in the hallway.
Vanessa's first statement complicated everything.
She confirmed that she had taken Lily from the bridal suite at 4:16 p.m., carried the child's cup while Lily fixed the strap on one shoe, and then returned it as they entered the service corridor.
She also confirmed that a man in a dark suit bumped into her near the catering station and apologized before continuing toward the groom's lounge.
“I didn't see his face clearly.”
Vanessa sat wrapped in a hospital blanket, though the room was warm.
“But I saw the watch because it caught the light.”
Detective Kim placed a photograph of Ethan's watch in front of her.
Vanessa nodded immediately.
“That one.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Who was wearing it?”
“I thought it was you.”
“It wasn't.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Then someone wanted me to think it was.”
Claire felt the sentence settle heavily across the table.
Vanessa explained that after the ceremony began, she noticed Lily walking toward the floral arch alone instead of joining the junior attendants, then watched her sway and reach for the wooden sign before collapsing.
She had started forward, but Mara reached the child first.
During the confusion, Vanessa saw the same dark-suited man enter the service corridor.
She followed him because she wanted to demand an explanation for why he had been handling drinks near a restricted preparation area.
She lost him near the loading dock.
Then her phone rang.
“It was Dean.”
Dean's attorney, who had joined him after Detective Kim seized the watch, immediately objected to the conversation.
Detective Kim ignored the objection long enough to ask what Dean had said.
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“He told me there had been an accident, that people were going to blame the venue, and that I should leave before the media arrived.”
Dean shook his head.
“I advised a vendor to avoid making statements until the facts were clear.”
“You told me Lucas would take me somewhere safe.”
Lucas turned toward Dean.
“You told me she had seen something and was hysterical.”
“I was trying to prevent chaos.”
Claire could not stop herself.
“You mean more chaos than a child collapsing at a wedding?”
Dean's eyes flashed with irritation, the first emotion Claire had seen break through his professional mask.
The argument ended when Detective Kim received confirmation that groom's lounge footage showed Ethan entering at 3:54 p.m. wearing the silver watch and leaving at 4:02 p.m. without it.
At 4:04 p.m., Dean entered the same room alone.
He remained inside for ninety-eight seconds.
When he exited, the camera angle did not show his wrist.
Ethan stared at the still images as if they belonged to someone else's life.
“I took the watch off when I washed my hands because the clasp had been bothering me.”
Claire remembered him mentioning it earlier that morning.
“You left it by the sink.”
“Yes.”
Dean leaned back.
“And I found it there.”
“Then why didn't you give it back?”
“I intended to.”
“Before or after Lily collapsed?”
Dean's face hardened.
Detective Kim ended the confrontation and asked him to submit to a formal interview at the precinct later that day.
His attorney agreed on his behalf.
For the first time since the wedding, Claire allowed herself to believe there might be a straight line between the altered security footage, the stolen watch, Vanessa's disappearance, and the financial records Dean had worked so hard to keep beyond her reach.
That hope lasted exactly fourteen minutes.
A uniformed officer entered the hallway carrying a clear evidence bag containing Claire's small white bridal purse.
The bag had been recovered from the bridal suite during a second search.
Inside the purse, beneath her lipstick and phone charger, investigators had found a small amber medication bottle with no pharmacy label.
Claire stared at it.
“That is not mine.”
Ethan looked from the bottle to her face.
Detective Kim asked whether Claire had ever seen it before.
“No.”
“Did anyone else have access to your purse?”
“It was on a chair in the bridal suite for hours.”
Evelyn appeared in the doorway behind them.
Her eyes went directly to the evidence bag.
“What is that?”
Nobody answered.
Claire watched the older woman's gaze move from the bottle to her son's face, and she saw the moment Evelyn understood what the object represented even without knowing what it contained.
“I knew it.”
Ethan turned sharply.
“Mom, stop.”
Evelyn pointed at Claire.
“You brought her into Lily's life, you ignored every warning, and now they find that in her wedding purse.”
Claire stepped forward.
“You do not know what it is.”
“I know it was hidden with your things.”
“It was planted.”
“Of course that is what you would say.”
Ethan moved between them again, but this time Claire looked at him instead of Evelyn.
“Tell her.”
Ethan hesitated.
The hesitation lasted perhaps one second.
It was enough.
Claire's face changed.
“You think it could be mine.”
“No.”
“You hesitated.”
“I am trying to understand what is happening.”
“So am I, but I do not look at you every time another piece of evidence appears and decide maybe you hurt your own daughter.”
Ethan's exhaustion turned into anger.
“You are asking me to ignore evidence because I love you.”
“I am asking you to remember who I am because you love me.”
The corridor went silent around them.
Claire reached for the engagement ring still on her finger and stopped before removing it.
She was not ready to give Evelyn that victory.
Instead she walked toward the elevator, gathering the damaged hem of her dress in one hand.
Mara followed.
Ethan called Claire's name once.
She did not turn around.
Inside the elevator, Claire's phone vibrated.
The message came from an unknown number.
LEAVE ETHAN AND THE GIRL ALONE, OR NEXT TIME SHE WILL NOT WAKE UP.
Detective Kim ordered an officer to trace the threatening message and advised Claire not to respond under any circumstance.
Claire stared at the screen.
“Whoever sent it knows Lily woke up.”
Mara nodded.
“And knows you are still connected to Ethan.”
Claire looked down the hospital hallway.
“That means they are close.”
“Or watching the news.”
“Either possibility is bad.”
Mara took Claire's phone and copied the message information for the detective.
“Do not let a threat make the decision it is demanding from you.”
Claire looked at her.
“That sounds rehearsed.”
“It is.”
Mara's face became sad.

“Anna used to say Dean's greatest skill was making other people feel as if surrender had been their own idea.”
The remark stayed with Claire long after the elevator doors opened.
