Chapter 4 - Don't Tell Dad.

Lily drifted back into a medicated sleep before Ethan could ask what Lucas had told her not to reveal, leaving the sentence suspended over the hospital room like smoke that refused to clear.
Dr. Reed warned them that Lily might speak incoherently while recovering and that memory fragments after a medical crisis could be unreliable, but Ethan's expression made clear that he would never again hear his brother's name without remembering those four words.
Detective Kim interviewed Lily only after consulting the medical team, and even then the questions were simple enough that Claire could hear how carefully the detective avoided leading the child.
Lily remembered the bridal suite, lemonade, Vanessa taking her downstairs, and seeing Uncle Lucas near a service door while she waited for the ceremony to begin.
She did not remember collapsing.
“What did Uncle Lucas say?”
Detective Kim asked gently.
Lily's forehead creased.
“He told me not to tell Dad I saw him with Grandma's lawyer.”
Ethan's face went still.
“Dean?”
Lily nodded.
“They were mad.”
“Where were they?”
“By the kitchen hall.”
“What were they talking about?”
Lily looked toward Claire as though asking permission to admit she had been listening.
Claire gave her a small reassuring smile.
“I heard Uncle Lucas say something about Monday and an audit.”
The word changed the room.
Claire was a forensic accountant who specialized in nonprofit compliance, and she had planned to spend the first week after the honeymoon helping Ethan review the family foundation's reporting systems because he wanted to become more involved before the next board meeting.
Lucas had joked about it at dinner two weeks earlier.
“So the bride gets a honeymoon and the foundation gets an audit.”
Claire had assumed it was teasing.
Now she remembered how quickly Dean Harrow had changed the subject.
Detective Kim wrote everything down and asked Lily whether anyone touched her drink after she left the bridal suite.
Lily squeezed her eyes shut as if searching through fog.
“Vanessa carried it when I fixed my shoe.”
“Did she give it back?”
“Yes.”
“Did anyone else touch it?”
Lily hesitated.
“A man bumped her.”
“Which man?”
“I don't know.”
Claire leaned forward despite herself.
“What was he wearing?”
Detective Kim raised one hand, reminding Claire not to guide the answer.
Lily thought for several seconds.
“A black suit.”
That described half the wedding.
Ethan sat beside the bed after the interview and stared at the wall while Lily returned to sleep.
“He knew about the audit.”
Claire did not pretend to misunderstand.
“Lucas knew I was going to look at the foundation records.”
“He sits on the board.”
“So does your mother.”
Ethan's jaw tightened.
“Don't start building a case against my family before we know what happened.”
Claire felt the unfairness like a slap.
“I am not building anything.”
“You just listed my mother as a suspect.”
“I listed a fact.”
“You have been looking at Lucas like he is guilty since Mara said she saw someone his height.”
Claire stood.
“And you looked at me like I poisoned Lily because I handed her lemonade.”
The words landed between them with enough force to make Ethan flinch.
Neither apologized.
Mara followed Claire into the hallway and waited until the door closed behind them.
“You two are frightened, and frightened people look for certainty wherever they can find it.”
Claire laughed without humor.
“Is that your medical opinion?”
“No.”
Mara leaned against the wall.
“It's my opinion as someone who watched Anna spend years making excuses for this family.”
Claire turned.
Mara rarely spoke about Ethan's late wife unless Lily asked a direct question.
“What excuses?”
Mara's expression changed.
“Anna knew something was wrong with the foundation before she died.”
Claire felt a new kind of cold settle under her skin.
“How do you know?”
“Because she called me three days before the accident and said she had found payments she could not explain.”
“Did she tell Ethan?”
“She said she was going to.”
Claire stared at her.
“Did you ever tell him this?”
Mara looked away.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because after Anna died, Evelyn told everyone Anna had been overwhelmed, distracted, and making strange claims about money, and I was grieving enough to doubt my own memory.”
Claire's anger arrived slowly.
“You let Ethan believe his wife died without ever knowing she was afraid of something inside his family.”
“Yes.”
Mara's answer was quiet.
“And I have regretted it for six years.”
Before Claire could respond, Detective Kim approached with a printed image from venue security.
A camera facing the loading dock had captured a figure leaving through an employee exit at 4:25 p.m., minutes after Lily collapsed.
The face was partly hidden by a baseball cap, but the coat, shoes, and body shape matched Vanessa Pike.
She entered the passenger side of a dark SUV.
The vehicle belonged to Dean Harrow's law firm.
Ethan arrived behind Claire just in time to hear that detail.
His face changed from suspicion to disbelief.
“My mother's attorney picked up our missing wedding planner?”
Detective Kim folded the image into her file.
“That is what we are trying to determine.”
At that moment Lucas appeared from the elevator carrying coffee and a paper bag of breakfast sandwiches, unaware that everyone in the hallway had turned toward him.
Ethan walked directly to his brother.
“Why were you arguing with Dean before the ceremony?”
Lucas stopped.
His eyes moved from Ethan to Detective Kim and then to Claire.
“Who told you that?”
“Lily.”
The paper bag slipped slightly in Lucas's hand.
Ethan stepped closer.
“What did you tell my daughter not to tell me?”
Lucas's face lost its practiced ease.
“Nothing that has anything to do with what happened to her.”
Claire heard the mistake immediately.
“So there was something.”
Lucas looked at her with sudden anger.
“Stay out of this.”
Ethan grabbed his brother's arm before Lucas could turn away.
“No.”
The corridor went still.
“You are going to tell me what you were hiding, and you are going to tell me now.”
Lucas looked at Lily's closed hospital room door and finally lowered his voice.
“Dean said if Claire started reviewing the foundation on Monday, she would find transfers that were never supposed to be visible.”
Claire felt her heartbeat change.
“How much?”
Lucas swallowed.
“Almost four million dollars.”
Ethan released his arm as though burned.
“Where did it go?”
Lucas looked at their mother standing at the far end of the hallway.
“Ask her.”
After Lucas admitted the hidden transfers, Ethan walked alone to the end of the hospital corridor and stood beside a window overlooking the empty emergency parking lot.
Claire followed but stopped several feet away.
“My father trusted Dean with everything.”
Ethan spoke without turning.
“His will, the company, the foundation, even the letter he left Lily for her eighteenth birthday.”
Claire folded her arms.
“Trust is useful to people who want access.”
Ethan looked at her.
“You say that like an auditor.”
“I am an auditor.”
“No.”
His expression softened briefly.
“Right now you sound like someone who has already decided my family is guilty.”
Claire felt frustration return.
“I have decided they are hiding things.”
“That is different.”
“Yes.”
Ethan nodded slowly.
“Then help me separate the two.”
It was the first time he had asked Claire to investigate rather than defend herself.

She should have felt trusted.
Instead, she wondered why it took Lily nearly dying for him to admit that questions about the Cole family might be legitimate.
