Chapter 2 - Ninety Missing Seconds.

By the time Claire reached St. Catherine Medical Center, her wedding veil had been removed, her bouquet had been forgotten in the back of a stranger's car, and every white piece of fabric on her body felt like evidence from a celebration that no longer existed.

Ethan stood outside the pediatric treatment room with both hands pressed against the back of his neck, staring at the closed door while nurses moved around him with the practiced calm of people who knew panic was contagious.

Mara had arrived separately and changed into a borrowed hospital scrub top over her gray dress after a nurse recognized her as a pediatric emergency specialist from another hospital across town.

Claire had known Mara for only eight months, but Lily adored her because Mara had been the closest friend of Anna Cole, Ethan's late wife and Lily's mother.

That history had always made Claire cautious around her, yet tonight Mara was the only person in the building whose presence felt solid.

“The doctors are stabilizing her, and they are running every test they can justify right now.”

Mara spoke softly while Ethan continued staring at the door.

“Was it the sign?”

Claire's question sounded desperate even to herself.

“Could she have fallen and hit her head?”

Mara shook her head.

“She may have struck the sign when she went down, but from what I saw, the fall was probably the result, not the cause.”

Ethan finally turned.

“Then what caused it?”

“I don't know yet.”

The honesty landed harder than reassurance would have.

A physician named Dr. Jonah Reed emerged twenty minutes later, removed his glasses, and explained that Lily's heart rhythm had stabilized but she remained unconscious and would be monitored in the pediatric intensive care unit.

He carefully avoided dramatic language, but his choice of words made clear that something had affected Lily quickly and severely enough to concern the entire medical team.

“Was it an allergic reaction?”

Ethan asked the question as if he were trying to find a familiar enemy.

“Possibly, but we do not have enough information yet.”

Dr. Reed glanced between them.

“Did she eat or drink anything unusual in the hour before she collapsed?”

Claire felt Ethan's attention shift toward her before he even moved his head.

“She had lemonade.”

Claire forced herself to keep speaking.

“I handed it to her in the bridal suite, but it came from a catering tray, and several people had the same drink.”

“Did she finish it?”

“Most of it.”

“Who else was in the room?”

Claire pictured the chaos before the ceremony and hated how many faces immediately appeared.

“My sister Natalie, two bridesmaids, the photographer, the wedding coordinator, Lily, Mara for a few minutes, and Ethan's mother came in once.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Lucas was there too.”

Claire looked at him.

His younger brother Lucas Cole had arrived late, joked about nearly missing the ceremony, and spent less than two minutes in the bridal suite after bringing Lily the pearl hairpin she had forgotten in the hotel room.

Dr. Reed nodded and asked them to write down everyone they remembered, then returned to the treatment area.

The first police officer arrived soon afterward, followed by a detective named Rachel Kim, whose calm questions made Claire feel as though every answer opened another door she did not want to enter.

Detective Kim asked about the wedding, Lily's health history, family conflicts, custody issues, food allergies, medications, financial disputes, and any reason someone might want the ceremony interrupted.

Ethan answered most of the questions until the detective asked whether anyone had openly opposed the marriage.

Evelyn Cole appeared in the hallway at that exact moment.

“I did.”

Everyone turned.

Evelyn wore the same dark burgundy gown she had chosen for the wedding, but the elegant confidence she carried earlier had hardened into something almost ceremonial.

“I opposed the marriage because Claire moved into my son's life too quickly, and because my granddaughter deserves stability after losing her mother.”

Claire stared at her.

“We have been together for three years.”

“To you, perhaps that feels like forever.”

Ethan stepped between them.

“Mom, not here.”

Evelyn's eyes shifted to him.

“Especially here.”

Detective Kim asked Evelyn to wait nearby, then continued interviewing Claire while Ethan walked toward the window at the end of the corridor.

Claire answered until her throat ached, and then Detective Kim asked whether she still had the cup from Lily's drink.

“No, it was on the ballroom floor when we left.”

The detective made a note.

“Security collected several items before the cleaning staff entered, including a cup near the child and the broken sign.”

Mara, who had been listening from a nearby chair, suddenly sat straighter.

“Did they find her bracelet?”

Detective Kim looked up.

“What bracelet?”

Mara opened her palm and revealed the silver star charm.

“I found this caught under the sign after Lily was taken out.”

Ethan crossed the hallway immediately.

“That came from her bracelet.”

Detective Kim placed the charm in an evidence envelope and asked Mara exactly where she found it.

Claire watched the detective's expression become more focused when Mara mentioned the unidentified man disappearing down the service corridor.

Within an hour, hospital security coordinated with the venue and sent over preliminary video clips from the ballroom, front lobby, kitchen entrance, and service corridors.

Detective Kim viewed them on a tablet while Ethan and Claire sat three chairs apart, both pretending not to notice the distance.

The main ballroom footage showed Lily walking near the floral arch at 4:17 p.m., holding a clear cup in one hand and touching her bracelet with the other.

At 4:18 p.m., a cluster of guests passed between her and the camera.

At 4:20 p.m., Lily collapsed.

The service corridor camera should have captured the same period, but the screen jumped directly from 4:17:46 to 4:19:16.

Ninety seconds were missing.

“That isn't a normal recording gap.”

The venue security manager's voice came through Detective Kim's speakerphone.

“The system logs whenever a camera disconnects, and there was no disconnect logged.”

Detective Kim ended the call and looked at Ethan.

“Who has access to the venue's security system?”

“The venue staff, I assume.”

Claire answered before Ethan could.

The detective glanced at the notes on her tablet.

“And anyone issued temporary event credentials by management.”

Mara's face changed.

“The wedding planner.”

Claire felt a sudden rush of memory.

Vanessa Pike, their wedding coordinator, had worn a silver-gray headset and carried a master access badge on a white ribbon around her neck all afternoon.

At 4:16 p.m., Vanessa had entered the bridal suite and told everyone the ceremony was delayed because one of the floral arches needed to be secured.

At 4:17 p.m., she had taken Lily by the hand and said she would walk her to the aisle because Claire needed to stay hidden from Ethan.

Claire stood so quickly that the chair struck the wall behind her.

“She was with Lily.”

Detective Kim immediately called the venue.

Nobody answered Vanessa's phone.

The manager checked the staff area and discovered her headset on a table, her access badge inside a drawer, and her purse still beneath the desk.

Vanessa Pike had vanished from the wedding before the ambulance arrived.

While Detective Kim waited for the venue to respond about Vanessa, Claire replayed the bridal suite in her mind until every ordinary movement became suspicious.

Vanessa had been cheerful all afternoon, carrying safety pins, tissues, extra lipstick, and a headset that never seemed to stop buzzing.

She had calmed Claire when Evelyn arrived with one final complaint about the seating chart.

She had found Lily's missing shoe ribbon.

She had even joked that the only emergency left was whether Ethan would cry first.

“Did Vanessa know anything about the family trust?”

Claire asked Ethan.

He looked confused.

“Why would she?”

“Your mother hired her.”

Ethan's expression tightened.

“My mother recommended her.”

“That is not the same thing.”

Evelyn overheard them from across the hallway.

“I recommended Vanessa because she has coordinated events for this family for twelve years.”

Claire turned.

“So she knows everyone.”

“Yes.”

“Everyone's routines too.”

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

“You are reaching for conspiracy because the alternative is that something went wrong while Lily was under your care.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“She was under all of our care.”

The correction surprised both women.

Claire looked at him, and for a brief second the distance between them narrowed.

Then his phone buzzed with a call from the doctor, and the moment disappeared.
