Chapter 2: The Christmas They Almost Lost

Chapter 2: The Christmas They Almost Lost
Back home, Abby was quietly placing the unopened presents back under the tree.
She didn't look excited.
She looked... guilty.
"I'm sorry, Mom," she whispered. "I ruined Christmas."
Her mother knelt beside her and gently held her face.
"You didn't ruin anything."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"They did."
Abby finally broke down.
"I thought Grandma didn't love me anymore."
Her mother wrapped both arms around her.
"Listen to me."
She looked her daughter straight in the eyes.
"Someone else's inability to love you doesn't decide your worth."
"You are loved."
"You are enough."
"And as long as I'm breathing..."
"...you will never wonder if you have a home."
That night, the two of them built a blanket fort in the living room.
They watched old Christmas movies.
Made hot chocolate.
Opened presents.
And laughed harder than they had in years.

Outside, the snow kept falling.
Inside, Abby finally felt safe.
