The stunned silence lasted only a few seconds.

The grandmother stared at the eviction notice, her hands trembling.

"You can't do this!" she shouted. "We're family!"

The mother slowly turned back.

"Family?" she asked, her voice calm but sharp. "Family doesn't leave a ten-year-old girl standing outside on Christmas Eve with two suitcases."

None of the relatives answered.

One by one, they lowered their eyes.

"I spent years paying this mortgage after Grandpa passed away," the mother continued. "I let all of you stay here because you said you needed help."

She looked directly at her mother.

"And the first time my daughter needed yours... you told her there wasn't a bed."

The grandmother tried to explain.

"We already had guests... we didn't think—"

"No," the mother interrupted. "You didn't care."

She pointed at the notice.

"The house has always been in my name. I simply stopped pretending it belonged to all of you."

Behind her, the family stood in the falling snow, realizing the woman they had always depended on was finally done saving them.
