The word landed like a stone dropped into still water.
The room didn’t understand it at first.
Then the pregnant woman slowly reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a thin black ID case.
She opened it.
Federal Authority Badge.
Internal Affairs Division.
Special Oversight Unit.
The caretaker took a step back without realizing it.
The blonde woman’s sobs faltered.
“That’s fake,” she said quickly. “She’s lying! She’s just some—some—
“Some pregnant woman?” the detective finished for her.
Silence.
The pregnant woman finally stood, one hand still supporting her stomach, the other holding the badge steady.
“I didn’t want to use this identity,” she said. “But you made it necessary.”
Her gaze shifted to the blonde woman.
“You pushed me down a staircase in a protected residence during an active investigation.”
The blonde woman’s face went pale.
“I didn’t know who you were…”
