Detective Ruiz turned a file in his hand.
“This wasn’t just assault,” he said. “It was an attempted elimination.”
He looked at the blonde woman.
“And you weren’t the only one involved.”
The caretaker stiffened.
The pregnant woman’s eyes shifted slightly toward her.
The room went silent again.
Then the caretaker whispered:
“I only did what I was told…”
The blonde woman snapped her head toward her.
“What are you talking about?!”
The caretaker began crying.
“They said if I helped… they would erase my debt.”
The pregnant woman exhaled slowly.
“Debt?” she repeated.
“No,” she corrected gently. “You were bribed.”
Detective Ruiz nodded.
“Money laundering. Corporate fraud. And attempted harm on a protected federal witness.”
The blonde woman’s voice cracked.
“Protected… witness?”
The pregnant woman placed a hand over her belly again.
