The caretaker froze.
The blonde woman, Vanessa, was still crying loudly, clinging to the old man's arm.
"I swear she slipped! I tried to save her!"
The pregnant woman, Elena, didn't answer.
Instead, she calmly ended the call and placed the phone beside her.
Less than three minutes later, the sound of police sirens echoed through the estate.
Vanessa's tears suddenly stopped.
"Police?" she whispered.
The front doors burst open.
Detective Daniel Ruiz entered with two uniformed officers and a team of investigators.
His eyes immediately found Elena.
"Are you injured?"
Elena nodded.
"My doctor is on the way."
Ruiz turned toward Vanessa.
"Ms. Carter, I'd like you to stay exactly where you are."
Vanessa frowned.
"What? I'm the victim here!"
Ruiz ignored her.
"Forensics, photograph the staircase. Collect every piece of evidence."
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Seriously? She just fell."
