CHAPTER 3 – A Secret From Emma's Past
As Human Resources rushed into the boutique, Adrian noticed something unusual.
Emma kept rubbing her left wrist.
He saw an old scar.
"You've worked here long?"
"Almost three years."
"You've never reported that injury?"
Emma smiled weakly.
"It happened before I worked here."
Sophie suddenly grabbed Emma's hand.
"Daddy... she has the same star."
Emma looked confused.
Adrian froze.
Sophie pointed to Emma's bracelet.
Hanging from it was a tiny silver star.
Around Sophie's neck...
An identical one.
Emma stared in disbelief.
"My mother made this before she passed away."
Adrian's breathing slowed.
Years earlier, his family's charitable foundation had funded a children's shelter after a devastating apartment fire.
Each survivor had received a handmade silver star from volunteers.
Only twelve had ever existed.
"You lived at Saint Mary's Shelter?"
Emma nodded.
"I was ten."
Adrian smiled for the first time all day.
"I built that shelter."
Emma's eyes widened.
"You... did?"
"No."
He looked around the boutique.
"My late wife did."

The room fell silent again.
Emma had unknowingly spent years wearing the final gift from the woman who had changed her life.
