Chapter 5: Justice

Chapter 5: Justice

The trial began nine months later.

By then Lily had recovered physically.

Emotionally...

Healing took longer.

She refused to sleep without a night-light.

She panicked whenever she smelled garbage trucks.

Every Tuesday, she met with a child psychologist who slowly helped her reclaim the carefree laughter that had once filled every room.

Inside the courtroom, prosecutors presented overwhelming evidence.

The sedative had come from Vanessa's prescription bottle.

Security footage showed her carrying Lily outside while everyone else remained indoors.

The checklist contained both Vanessa's fingerprints and my mother's handwriting.

Even Emma, in a child-sensitive interview, innocently told investigators,

"Mommy said Lily had to disappear before the party."

The jury needed less than four hours.

Vanessa was found guilty of attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, kidnapping, and conspiracy.

My mother was convicted of conspiracy, child endangerment, and obstruction of justice.

My father, who had knowingly helped conceal evidence and lied repeatedly to investigators, was convicted of obstruction and accessory charges.

As each verdict was read, I felt no triumph.

Only relief.

The people who had spent years convincing me that I was the family's greatest disappointment would never again have the opportunity to hurt my daughter.

Justice could not erase what happened.

But it could ensure it would never happen again.
