Chapter 3: The Hidden Room

Chapter 3: The Hidden Room

The next morning, Detective Sarah Mitchell returned to the house with a forensic team.

They weren't looking for fingerprints anymore.

They were looking for motive.

While photographing the basement, one investigator noticed fresh scrape marks across the concrete floor beneath an old bookshelf.

"Help me move this."

The shelf groaned as three officers pushed.

Behind it...

A narrow steel door appeared.

My father immediately shouted from the living room.

"That's just an old storage space!"

The detective ignored him.

The lock was new.

Much newer than the house itself.

After obtaining approval under the existing warrant, officers forced it open.

The room smelled of dust and bleach.

Inside were shelves filled with labeled storage boxes.

Most contained ordinary paperwork.

One box did not.

It held dozens of family photo albums.

Only...

Every picture containing Lily had been cut apart.

Her face had been removed from birthday photos.

Christmas portraits.

School pictures.

Even the ultrasound photo from my pregnancy.

Detective Mitchell frowned.

"This isn't anger."

She looked around the room.

"This is obsession."

Then another officer called from the far corner.

"I found something."

Hidden beneath a tarp sat a locked metal filing cabinet.

Inside were adoption records.

Birth certificates.

Medical files.

And one sealed envelope with my name written across the front.

The detective opened it carefully.

Inside was a DNA report dated four years earlier.

She stared at it for several seconds before looking at me.

"Did you know this existed?"

I shook my head.

"No."

The detective slowly handed me the document.

According to the report...

Marcus wasn't Lily's biological father.

But that wasn't the shocking part.

The report listed another match.

A ninety-nine-point-nine percent probability.

The biological grandfather...

Was my father.

The room became completely silent.

My knees nearly gave out.

"This has to be wrong," Marcus whispered.

Detective Mitchell didn't answer.

Because another envelope had already explained everything.

Years earlier...

The laboratory had discovered the samples had been intentionally switched.

Someone inside the family had secretly paid to falsify the report.

The truth had been buried.

Just like Lily almost had been.
