Chapter 4: The Truth Comes Out

Detectives confronted my parents separately.

My father denied everything.

He insisted the DNA documents were meaningless.

But my mother broke first.

After nearly six hours of questioning, she whispered,

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."

The detective leaned forward.

"What wasn't?"

She covered her face.

"When Emily got pregnant at eighteen..."

She began crying.

"...Vanessa convinced us that keeping the baby would destroy the family's reputation."

I stared through the interrogation-room glass, barely breathing.

My own mother continued.

"We tried convincing her to place Lily for adoption."

She looked toward me.

"When she refused..."

Her voice cracked.

"Vanessa never forgave that child."

Detectives kept listening.

My mother admitted that Vanessa had spent years manipulating the family, insisting Lily reminded everyone of "our biggest mistake."

The engagement party changed everything.

Marcus planned to legally adopt Lily after the wedding.

Once that happened...

Vanessa believed Lily would become a permanent part of the family.

She refused to let that happen.

So she created her own celebration.

Emma's fake birthday.

The decorations.

The distraction.

The sedative hidden inside Lily's juice.

The dumpster.

Every step had been planned.

My mother admitted she knew.

She just never believed Vanessa would actually leave Lily there.

Detectives arrested both women before the interview ended.

Outside the station, Marcus wrapped his arms around me.

"You hear me?"

I nodded weakly.

"Lily isn't their mistake."

He kissed my forehead.

"She's our miracle."
