Chapter 5 – The Trial

Six months later, the courtroom was completely full.

The prosecution presented security footage from the warehouse.

It showed my mother carrying Lily toward the dumpsters while Vanessa looked around to make sure no one was watching.

Another camera captured my father closing the heavy dumpster lid.

The defense argued it had all been a misunderstanding.

Then the prosecutor played Lily's forensic interview.

Her tiny voice echoed through the courtroom.

"Grandma said Mommy would stop ruining everything if I disappeared."

No one could look away.

Even several jurors were crying.

The medical examiner confirmed that Lily had been given enough medication to remain unconscious for hours.

Had we found her thirty minutes later, she likely would have died from heat exposure and oxygen deprivation.

The verdict came quickly.

Guilty.

Attempted murder.

Child abuse.

Conspiracy.

Child endangerment.

As deputies placed handcuffs on my mother, she looked directly at me.

For years, I had imagined wanting revenge.

Instead, I felt nothing.

Because the people leaving in handcuffs were no longer my family.

They were simply criminals finally facing the consequences of their choices.
