Chapter 2 – The Officer's First Question

Chapter 2 – The Officer's First Question

"Who found the child?"

The officer's voice cut through the chaos like a blade.

"I did," I answered, my hands still covered in rotten food, dirt, and blood from scraping against broken glass inside the dumpster.

The paramedics gently lifted Lily onto a stretcher.

One of them frowned as he checked her pupils.

"Possible sedative," he muttered to his partner.

"What?"

Marcus stepped forward.

"What did you say?"

"We won't know until the hospital runs tests."

That single sentence made every officer in the yard stop writing.

Possible sedative.

Not an accident.

Not a child hiding during a game.

Someone had made sure Lily couldn't cry for help.

The lead detective slowly turned toward my parents.

"When was the last time anyone saw this child awake?"

Silence.

My father crossed his arms.

"I don't know."

My mother folded her hands together as if she were attending church.

"Children wander."

The detective stared at her.

"Children don't sedate themselves and crawl into dumpsters."

Vanessa finally spoke.

"You're twisting everything."

Marcus couldn't hold back anymore.

"My daughter was buried under trash!"

Emma began crying behind Vanessa's legs.

For the first time all morning, my sister looked nervous—not because Lily was fighting for her life, but because the police were asking questions.

One officer walked toward the dumpster.

Inside, scattered beneath the garbage bags, he found something unexpected.

A small pink plastic cup.

Still containing melted ice.

He carefully sealed it into an evidence bag.

Then another officer found an empty bottle lying behind several cardboard boxes.

Children's nighttime cough syrup.

Almost empty.

The expiration date had been scratched off.

The detective looked at my mother.

"Who gave the child medicine this morning?"

No one answered.
