Chapter 3 – Lily Finally Wakes Up

Chapter 3 – Lily Finally Wakes Up
The hospital smelled like antiseptic and exhaustion.
Hours passed before anyone spoke to us.
At 3:47 p.m., the pediatric doctor walked into Lily's room.
"She's awake."
I nearly collapsed.
Marcus caught me before my knees hit the floor.
Lily looked impossibly small beneath the blankets.
An oxygen tube rested beneath her nose.
She blinked slowly when she saw me.
"Mommy?"
"I'm here, baby."
I kissed her forehead over and over.
"I thought... I was in trouble."
"You've done nothing wrong."
She frowned.
"Grandma gave me sleepy juice."
The room froze.
The detective, who had quietly remained outside the doorway, stepped inside.
"Sweetheart," he asked gently, "what happened after that?"
Lily held her stuffed rabbit tightly.
"Grandma said Emma's birthday was more important."
Tears filled my eyes.
"Then Aunt Vanessa said I had to hide."
"Where?"
She looked directly at me.
"In the big trash box."
My heart stopped.
"They said if I stayed quiet... everyone would finally be happy."
Even the detective lowered his head for a moment.
Children don't invent details like that.
Especially not while recovering from heavy sedation.
The nurse quietly walked out to notify the officers.
Within minutes, the investigation changed completely.

This was no longer child neglect.
This was attempted homicide.
