CHAPTER 2 – THE FIRST LIE FALLS APART

CHAPTER 2 – THE FIRST LIE FALLS APART
The officer didn't ask my father why my daughter had been found in a dumpster.
He asked something much simpler.
"Who was the last adult to see this little girl alive?"
Nobody answered.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I assumed she went outside."
"You assumed?" the officer repeated.
Marcus stepped forward.
"No. They knew exactly where she was."
The paramedics were already loading Lily into the ambulance.
One medic looked back toward the officers.
"Possible sedative exposure," she called.
Everything changed.
The officers immediately separated everyone.
One questioned me.
Another questioned Marcus.
Two others walked through the house.
Within minutes they found Lily's small princess backpack hidden beneath blankets in the laundry room.
Inside were her inhaler...
her birthday card...
and an empty prescription bottle that didn't belong to our family.
My mother's face turned white.
"I've never seen that bottle before."
The officer held it up.
"It has your husband's name on it."
Nobody spoke.
Then another officer walked outside carrying something wrapped inside an evidence bag.
A roll of gray duct tape.
Covered with fingerprints.
Marcus looked at me.
"They planned this."
I wanted to disagree.
I couldn't.
May you like
Because deep inside...
I already knew.
