Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Knew Too Much.

Rosa did not sleep that night.
Neither did Ethan.
At six in the morning, he sent her one message and nothing more.
I found proof that Victoria knew about Lily before the engagement dinner.
I will not come to your apartment unless you ask me to.
Rosa read the message while Lily slept beside her with Button tucked under her chin.
She hated that a part of her was relieved Ethan had finally learned restraint.
She hated even more that she still remembered the man he had been before silence divided them.
At nine, Rosa called him.
"Come alone."
Ethan arrived forty minutes later carrying no security team, no flowers, and no expensive peace offering.
He held only a folder.
Rosa let him inside.
Her apartment was small but bright.
Children's drawings covered one wall.
A secondhand keyboard sat near the window.
Ethan stared at it.
"She practices there?"
"She teaches herself there."
Rosa folded her arms.
"Do not make this about what you missed."
"I'm trying not to."
"Try harder."
He nodded.
Lily appeared from the hallway in pajamas.
She stopped when she saw him.
Ethan lowered himself into a crouch without moving closer.
"Hi, Lily."
She studied him.
"Are you the piano man?"
Rosa closed her eyes briefly.
Ethan almost smiled.
"I guess I am."
"Your piano is too loud."
"It usually doesn't make any sound."
"That's sad."
The simple statement struck him harder than it should have.
Lily looked at his folder.
"Is that my picture?"
Ethan glanced at Rosa before answering.
"A copy of one."
"The lady took mine."
"Victoria?"
Lily nodded.
"She said Grandma wasn't my grandma."
Rosa froze.
Ethan's face changed.
"She said that to you?"
Lily looked down.
"She said Mama put bad ideas in my head."
Rosa knelt beside her.
"When did she say that?"
"Before the dinner."
Rosa's voice became very quiet.
"How long before?"
Lily counted on her fingers.
"Three sleeps."
Ethan and Rosa looked at each other.
Victoria had approached Lily days before the confrontation.
"Where were you?" Rosa asked.
"The garden room."
"Miss Victoria said I shouldn't tell because you would lose your job."
Rosa's face went pale.
Ethan's hands tightened.
He forced himself not to speak until his anger was under control.
"Did she ever talk to you another time?"
Lily nodded.
"She asked if Mama had pictures of you."
Rosa stood so abruptly that the chair behind her scraped the floor.
"Victoria was questioning my child."
Ethan looked sick.
"Without either of us knowing."
"You didn't need to know."
Rosa's anger turned toward him.
"I needed to know."
"You didn't even know she existed."
"Exactly."
"And whose family made sure of that?"
Ethan accepted the blow.
He had no defense.
Lily looked between them and became frightened.
Rosa immediately softened.
"We're not mad at you, baby."
"Grown-ups are talking too loudly."
Lily nodded uncertainly.
Ethan lowered his voice.
"I'm sorry."
Lily returned to her room after Rosa promised pancakes.
Only then did Ethan open the folder.
Inside were copies of the hidden letters, the archive logs, and still images from the piano camera.
Rosa looked at the image of Victoria gripping Lily's wrist.
Her face became stone.
"I want her away from Lily forever."
"So do I."
"That doesn't mean you decide what happens."
"I know."
Ethan placed another document on the table.
"This is a proposed protective order my lawyer drafted."
"Nothing has been filed."
"I wanted you to choose whether to use it."
Rosa read the first page.
For the first time, some of the anger left her face.
"Thank you."
Ethan nodded.
It was the smallest kindness he had ever been thanked for.
He suddenly understood how badly his family had distorted the meaning of power.
His phone buzzed.
Daniel's message contained a name.
Celeste Haynes.
Victoria's older sister.
Ethan frowned.
Victoria had barely spoken about Celeste.
He remembered meeting her once at a charity auction seven years earlier.
She had left New York soon afterward and reportedly moved to Oregon.
Daniel called immediately.
"Celeste contacted my office."
"She says she has information about Victoria and Grant."
"Why now?"
"She saw the canceled wedding report."
"She wants immunity from civil action before she talks."
Ethan glanced at Rosa.
"Tell her she talks to both of us or not at all."
Rosa raised an eyebrow.
"Both?"
"This concerns Lily."
"You deserve to hear it firsthand."
Rosa considered that.
"Fine."
Celeste joined by encrypted video that afternoon.
She looked older than Victoria, with tired eyes and no makeup.
The first thing she said was, "My sister has been afraid of that child since before she was born."
Rosa went still.
Ethan leaned toward the screen.
"Explain."
Celeste looked ashamed.
"Our father, Charles Haynes, was negotiating with Robert Caldwell six years ago."
"Not a merger."
"A rescue."
"Haynes Capital was drowning in hidden debt."
"Robert planned to buy certain assets quietly."
"He wanted the Caldwell and Haynes families tied together eventually."
Ethan felt cold.
"An arranged marriage."
"Not officially."
"But our fathers discussed you and Victoria as if you were divisions on a balance sheet."
Rosa's mouth tightened.
Celeste continued.
"Then Robert learned about Rosa."
"He panicked because a child outside their plan could change inheritance, control, and public perception."
Ethan stared at the screen.
"Victoria knew then?"
"She overheard our father."
"She was twenty-two."
"She became obsessed with the idea that Rosa had stolen a life promised to her."
Rosa gave a disbelieving laugh.
"I had never met her."
"That never mattered to Victoria."
Celeste looked down.
"She began collecting information."
"After Robert died, she found Grant."
"Grant had the old files."
"She paid him to keep monitoring Rosa."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"Paid him with what?"
"Haynes money."
"And later, Caldwell money routed through merger consulting contracts."
Ethan looked at Daniel on the second screen.
Daniel was already taking notes.
Celeste continued.
"Two years ago, Victoria learned Rosa was looking for household work after her mother died."
Rosa's face tightened at the mention of her mother.
"Victoria arranged for the agency to place her at your estate."
"Why?"
"Because she wanted control."
"If Rosa was close, Victoria could watch her."
"She could see whether Lily resembled you."
"She could make sure Rosa never reached you privately."
Ethan's voice became cold.
"Rosa worked in my house for two years and Victoria made sure I never knew who she was."
Celeste nodded.
"She changed staffing rotations."
"She scheduled Rosa away from formal dinners when you were home."
"She discouraged you from entering the service wing."
Rosa remembered dozens of strange schedule changes.
Every one of them suddenly had a reason.
"Why did Victoria attack Lily at the piano?" Rosa asked.
Celeste hesitated.
"Because of Eleanor's photograph."
"Victoria knew Eleanor had acknowledged Lily."
"She thought every copy had been destroyed."
"If that photograph reached Ethan before the wedding, Victoria believed he would ask questions."
Ethan's eyes hardened.
"She was right."
Celeste leaned closer to the camera.
"There is something worse."
Rosa felt dread settle in her stomach.
"What?"
"Victoria wasn't planning to wait until after the wedding to deal with Rosa."
"She had a contract prepared for Saturday morning."
"A settlement?"
"A custody waiver."
Rosa stood.
"What custody waiver?"
Celeste's face filled with shame.
"A document stating Rosa accepted a large payment and acknowledged that Ethan was not Lily's father."
"Victoria intended to make it look as if Rosa had tried to extort the Caldwell family."
Ethan's expression turned lethal.
"Rosa would never sign that."
Celeste shook her head.
"She wasn't supposed to know she signed it."
Celeste hesitated before ending the call.
"Rosa, there is one more thing."
Rosa looked at the screen.
"What?"
"Victoria kept a calendar of Lily's routine."
Ethan's expression darkened.
"What routine?"
"School pickup."
"Days Rosa worked late."
"Pediatric appointments."
"Even which playground Lily preferred."
Rosa felt physically ill.
"Where is the calendar?"
"I saw it in Victoria's private office six months ago."
"I thought it was part of some charity scheduling file."
Celeste looked ashamed.
"I should have asked more questions."
Rosa's voice was flat.
"Everyone should have."
May you like
After the call, Daniel ordered an immediate review of every location Victoria's staff had tracked.
That precaution came hours too late to prevent the next move, but it gave investigators the first map of how carefully Lily had been watched.
