Chapter 6 - The Camera Above the Piano.

Margaret Shaw was eighty-two and sharper than every lawyer Ethan had spoken to that week.

She refused to discuss anything until Daniel proved they had come without Grant Mercer.

"That man stood outside Eleanor's hospital door and listened," Margaret said.

"I will not have him listening now."

Grant remained at the mansion under Daniel's instructions.

Ethan and Daniel drove to Queens alone.

Margaret's apartment inside St. Catherine's was small and warm, crowded with books, framed family photographs, and a record player that looked older than Ethan.

She offered them tea.

Ethan declined.

Margaret made it anyway.

"Your mother hated men who refused tea because they were too upset to hold a cup."

Ethan almost smiled.

It hurt.

"You called me."

Margaret nodded.

"I saw the news photographs."

"Victoria leaving your house."

"Rosa's name wasn't printed, but Mrs. Whitaker called me."

"You knew Rosa?"

"I met her once."

Ethan leaned forward.

Margaret folded both hands over her cane.

"Your mother found Rosa when Lily was two months old."

Ethan's breath caught.

"She found them?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

"She tried."

Margaret's expression hardened.

"Your father stopped her."

Ethan shut his eyes briefly.

The answer was becoming a refrain.

"How?"

"Eleanor was already sick."

"Robert threatened to cut off the medical trust that paid for Rosa's mother's cancer treatment."

Ethan looked up sharply.

"Rosa's mother was sick?"

"Leukemia."

"Rosa was caring for an infant and her mother at the same time."

"Your father told Eleanor that if she brought scandal into your life, he would make sure Rosa lost every form of financial support connected to the Caldwell charitable network."

Ethan felt nausea rise.

"Did Rosa know?"

"Not the details."

"Eleanor made sure the assistance continued anonymously."

"Rosa believed it came from a university emergency fund."

Margaret looked toward the window.

"Your mother was brave in pieces."

"She hated herself for not being brave all at once."

Ethan stared at the untouched tea.

"Why hide the letters in the piano?"

"Because Robert searched her desk."

"She knew he would never touch the piano after she became too ill to play."

Margaret reached into a drawer and removed a small photograph.

It showed Eleanor sitting on a park bench beside a younger Rosa.

Rosa held baby Lily wrapped in a yellow blanket.

Ethan touched the edge of the photograph with one finger.

His mother had held his daughter before he did.

"Did she hold Lily?"

Margaret smiled sadly.

"For almost an hour."

"She cried the entire time."

Ethan looked away.

Margaret continued.

"Eleanor said Lily had your eyes."

"Rosa said that was exactly what frightened her."

"Why?"

"Because Rosa had already been followed."

Ethan turned back.

"By Aegis?"

"She didn't know who."

"A black sedan appeared outside her building for days."

"A man approached her near a grocery store and warned her that powerful families could make custody complicated."

Daniel's face hardened.

"Did he identify himself?"

"No."

"Rosa moved the next morning."

Ethan understood now why she vanished from her apartment.

Not pride.

Not indifference.

Fear.

"Why did she later take a job in my house?"

Margaret frowned.

"She told me she didn't know it was your house until after the agency assigned her."

"Victoria arranged the assignment."

Margaret went still.

"Then Victoria wanted her close."

"Why?"

Margaret's eyes moved toward Ethan.

"Because she knew about Lily."

"But knowing is not the same as needing Rosa under surveillance."

Ethan thought of the background file.

The missing camera footage.

The old letter in Victoria's clutch.

"There is something else."

Margaret nodded slowly.

"Your mother believed Robert's supposed paternity result was fake."

"Before she died, she asked me to find the laboratory."

"I did."

"It had closed."

"But one technician remembered the case because a wealthy client paid for rush processing."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Was a test performed?"

"Yes."

Ethan stopped breathing.

Margaret reached for another envelope.

"The technician would not give me a report."

"But she told me the result did not exclude the alleged father."

Ethan knew enough genetics to understand.

"So the test suggested I was Lily's father."

"Yes."

"And my father told my mother the opposite."

"Yes."

The room went quiet.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

"We need our own test."

Daniel nodded.

Margaret tapped her cane once.

"With Rosa's consent."

Ethan looked ashamed.

"Of course."

Margaret studied him for several seconds.

"Good."

"You are learning faster than your father did."

On the drive back to Manhattan, Daniel received a message from his security team.

"The east parlor footage may not be completely gone."

Ethan turned.

"You said the camera was disabled."

"The main camera was."

"But the piano insurer installed a separate motion sensor camera inside the instrument's humidity-control cabinet."

"It is designed to document environmental damage."

"It has no audio and only captures a narrow angle."

"Did it record last night?"

Daniel's expression said yes before his mouth did.

Back at the mansion, they watched the clip in the secure office.

The image was partially blocked by the piano lid.

But it clearly showed Lily sitting on the bench.

Victoria entered.

She stood behind the child for almost thirty seconds before Lily noticed her.

Lily slid down from the bench.

Victoria blocked her path.

The little girl tried to move left.

Victoria moved left.

Lily tried right.

Victoria moved right.

Then Victoria reached down and took something from Lily's hand.

The angle did not show what.

Lily reached for it.

Victoria pulled her wrist.

Rosa rushed into frame.

She put herself between them.

Victoria shoved her.

Rosa stumbled.

Lily wrapped both arms around Rosa.

Victoria kicked Rosa once in the side.

The clip ended when movement left the camera's field.

Ethan stared at the frozen final frame.

There was no ambiguity.

No misunderstanding.

No attack by Rosa.

Daniel rewound to the moment Victoria removed something from Lily's hand.

"Can we enhance that?"

"Not much."

They enlarged the frame.

A pale rectangle appeared between Victoria's fingers.

Ethan frowned.

"Paper?"

Daniel zoomed again.

There was a dark border around the object.

It looked like an old photograph.

Ethan remembered the photograph Margaret had shown him of Eleanor, Rosa, and baby Lily.

"Lily had a picture."

Daniel froze the image.

"Maybe."

Ethan called Rosa.

She did not answer.

He waited ten minutes and called once more.

This time she picked up.

"What?"

Her tone made it clear she had considered ignoring him.

"Did Lily have a photograph with her last night?"

Silence.

"Why?"

"The secondary camera caught Victoria taking something from her."

Rosa inhaled sharply.

"Lily carries a picture in Button's back pocket."

"What picture?"

"Your mother holding her when she was a baby."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Victoria took it."

"Why would she care about that photograph?"

Rosa asked.

Ethan did not know.

Then Daniel placed another image beside the enlarged footage.

It was the newborn picture recovered from the archive.

On the reverse side, barely visible in the scan, was a handwritten note.

Eleanor had written it.

My granddaughter, Lily Caldwell.

Ethan stared at the words.

Victoria had not attacked a child because she touched a piano.

She had attacked her because Lily was carrying proof that Ethan's mother had recognized her as family.

Ethan asked Daniel to preserve the piano footage in three independent locations.

One copy went to outside counsel.

One went to law enforcement.

One stayed in a secured evidence vault no Caldwell executive could access alone.

"Including me," Ethan said.

Daniel looked surprised.

"Especially you?"

"Especially me."

Ethan had finally understood that a system was not trustworthy because the right man promised to behave.

It was trustworthy when no single man could erase the truth.

Before leaving Margaret's apartment, he asked for a copy of the photograph showing Eleanor with baby Lily.

Margaret handed it to him but kept the original.

"Your family has lost enough originals," she said.

Ethan accepted the rebuke.

May you like

He placed the copy inside his wallet behind his identification card.

For the first time in his life, the name Caldwell on the front of the wallet felt less significant than the child pictured inside it.
