Chapter 11 - Victoria's Last Bargain.

Ethan met Lily at a quiet public garden rather than the mansion.

Rosa chose the place.

Daniel positioned security far enough away to feel invisible.

Lily arrived wearing yellow rain boots even though the sky was clear.

She carried Button in one hand and the DNA report in the other.

The report was inside a plastic folder covered with star stickers.

Ethan crouched when she approached.

"Hi."

Lily looked at him seriously.

"Mama says you're my dad."

"The test says I am."

"Did you know before?"

The question cut directly through every adult complication.

"No."

"Why not?"

Ethan glanced at Rosa.

She gave him no rescue.

Good.

He owed Lily an answer she could understand.

"Some grown-ups made bad choices and kept important information from me."

"I also stopped looking when I should have kept looking."

Lily considered that.

"Are you going to stop looking again?"

Ethan's throat closed.

"No."

"Okay."

She handed him Button.

"Hold him."

Ethan accepted the rabbit like a sacred object.

Lily climbed onto a bench beside him.

For twenty minutes, they talked about school, pancakes, dinosaurs, and why pianos should never be locked.

Rosa watched from several feet away.

She did not mistake tenderness for trust.

Trust would require time.

But when Lily laughed at Ethan's terrible attempt to name three dinosaur species, Rosa felt something inside her loosen.

Not love.

Not yet.

Possibility.

At noon, Daniel approached with an expression that ended the peaceful moment.

"Victoria wants to meet."

Ethan's face closed.

"No."

"She says she has evidence against Charles."

"She also says she'll give it only to you and Rosa together."

Rosa folded her arms.

"Why me?"

"Because she wants something from you."

Victoria was under investigation but had not yet been charged with Lily's abduction.

Nadine's messages pointed primarily to Charles.

The video at the mansion proved Victoria had planned coercion and forgery, but lawyers were still sorting criminal conduct from corporate misconduct.

Rosa hated the idea of seeing her.

Then she thought of the missing pieces.

"I'll go."

Ethan shook his head.

"You don't owe her anything."

"I'm not going for her."

"I'm going because people have used my name in rooms I wasn't allowed into for six years."

"I want to hear this one myself."

They met Victoria at her attorney's office.

She wore a cream suit and no pearls.

A faint mark remained near her cheek from the confrontation, though makeup nearly covered it.

When Rosa entered, Victoria's eyes dropped briefly to Rosa's side where she had kicked her.

She showed no apology.

"Where is Lily?"

Rosa's stare became ice.

"Do not say her name like you care."

Victoria leaned back.

"Fine."

"The child."

Ethan's voice cut in.

"Use her name or don't refer to her at all."

Victoria laughed softly.

"Already playing father."

"You wasted no time."

Ethan sat across from her.

"What do you want?"

Victoria looked at Rosa.

"A statement."

Rosa almost smiled.

"Of course."

"I want you to state publicly that the confrontation was emotional, that I did not intend to hurt Lily, and that you do not believe I was involved in taking her from the apartment building."

Rosa stared at her.

"You kicked me while I was holding her."

"I lost my temper."

"You grabbed her wrist."

"I was taking a photograph."

"You threatened my job to keep her quiet."

Victoria's expression tightened.

"I made mistakes."

Rosa leaned forward.

"You built a cage around our lives and called each bar a mistake."

For the first time, Victoria looked away.

Ethan said, "What evidence do you have?"

Victoria slid a small key across the table.

"Safe-deposit box."

"Inside are ledgers my father kept off the Haynes books."

"They show payments to Grant, Dr. Price, Aegis Meridian, and several people at Caldwell Tower."

Ethan did not touch the key.

"Why would you have them?"

"Because my father doesn't trust anyone."

"I learned not to trust him back."

Rosa watched Victoria carefully.

"And if I give your statement?"

"You get the key."

Rosa laughed.

"No."

Victoria's face hardened.

"You don't understand what is in that box."

"Then give it to investigators."

"I need protection."

"From consequences?"

"From my father."

That answer sounded different.

Rosa studied her.

Victoria's hands were trembling slightly beneath the table.

"Are you afraid of him?"

Victoria's mouth tightened.

"Fear is not relevant."

"It became relevant when he used your assistant to take my daughter."

Victoria flinched.

"I didn't order that."

"Did you know he might?"

Silence.

Rosa had her answer.

"You knew he was capable of it."

"I knew he was desperate."

"That is not the same thing."

"It is when a child is involved."

Victoria's eyes flashed.

"Do not lecture me about children."

Rosa went still.

"Why?"

Victoria immediately regretted the sentence.

Ethan noticed.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria looked toward her attorney.

Marcus Vale said quietly, "Victoria, you do not have to answer."

She ignored him.

"My father raised us like assets."

"Celeste was the brilliant one until she refused him."

"Then I became the useful one."

"He told me from the time I was sixteen that I would marry someone who strengthened the family."

"When Robert started talking about Ethan, my father treated it as settled."

Ethan's expression was unreadable.

Victoria continued.

"Then Rosa appeared."

"A graduate student who could make Ethan laugh."

"A woman who didn't know which fork mattered at a donor dinner."

"My father called her temporary."

Rosa's jaw tightened.

"I didn't know you existed."

"I know."

Victoria's voice cracked unexpectedly.

"That was the worst part."

"You weren't competing."

"You simply had what I had been trained to earn."

Ethan stared at her.

"So you punished her."

Victoria looked down.

"At first, I watched."

"Then your mother acknowledged Lily."

"Then Robert died and Eleanor died and everyone acted like the old secrets were buried."

"I thought if I could keep Rosa close, I could manage the risk."

Rosa shook her head in disbelief.

"You placed me in Ethan's house."

"Yes."

"You changed my shifts."

"Yes."

"You questioned Lily when I wasn't there."

Victoria's voice lowered.

"Yes."

"And you forged my signature."

"Grant arranged that."

"You approved it."

Victoria did not answer.

Ethan finally reached for the safe-deposit key.

"We don't bargain for evidence."

"You either give us the bank and box information voluntarily, or investigators will obtain it another way."

Victoria's mouth curved bitterly.

"Still so certain money and law obey you."

"No."

Ethan looked at Rosa.

"I'm learning they shouldn't."

Victoria's eyes followed his glance.

Something like jealousy flickered there, but it no longer had power.

"If the wedding is canceled publicly, my father loses everything."

Ethan replied, "The wedding is canceled publicly."

"Then he will come after you."

"He already came after Lily."

Victoria leaned forward.

"You don't understand."

"The wedding contract contains a control trigger."

Ethan frowned.

"What control trigger?"

"Robert and Charles built it years ago."

"If the Caldwell-Haynes marriage closes alongside the merger, a block of dormant voting shares transfers into a joint family trust."

"My father has been borrowing against the expected control of those shares."

Ethan stared at her.

"Those shares belong to the Eleanor Caldwell Foundation."

Victoria nodded.

"Exactly."

Rosa felt the room shift.

Eleanor's foundation funded hospitals, scholarships, and research programs.

It was worth billions.

Victoria continued.

"If the marriage fails, the shares remain with the foundation."

"My father's loans become callable."

"Haynes Capital collapses."

Ethan stood slowly.

"So this was never just a wedding."

Victoria shook her head.

"Not to him."

"Maybe not to your father either."

Ethan looked toward Robert's old shadow once again.

Victoria pushed the key closer.

"My father will destroy anything linking him to the kidnapping before investigators reach it."

"The box is under an alias."

"Only I can open it without a court order."

Rosa asked, "What do you really want?"

Victoria met her eyes.

The arrogance finally disappeared.

"A way out before my father realizes I'm the one who kept copies."

At that moment, Marcus's phone vibrated.

He looked at the screen and went pale.

"Victoria."

"What?"

"Your father's car just entered the garage."

Victoria stopped breathing.

"He knows I'm here."

Before they left Victoria's attorney's office, Rosa stopped at the door.

She turned back toward Victoria.

"You called me a beggar in that room."

Victoria's face tightened.

"I was angry."

"No."

Rosa shook her head.

"You were comfortable."

"Anger did not invent what you thought of me."

Victoria said nothing.

Rosa continued.

"I cleaned Ethan's house because my daughter needed food, rent, and stability."

"There is no shame in work."

"The shame is using someone's work as proof they deserve less dignity."

Victoria looked down.

Rosa opened the door.

"Whatever happens to you next, remember that."

May you like

Ethan followed without adding anything.

For once, Rosa's words did not need a powerful man to make them heavier.
