Chapter 5: Freefall

At 9:30 AM, the New York Stock Exchange opened to a bloodbath.
Mara stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of her loft, watching the financial news networks on her monitor wall. The headline tickers were a blur of catastrophic red. VANCE INDUSTRIES CEO HOSPITALIZED. SEC LAUNCHES MASSIVE PROBE. INSIDER TRADING SCANDAL ROCKS TECH GIANT.
Within the first fifteen minutes of trading, Vance Industries’ stock plummeted by forty percent. The automated sell-offs triggered a temporary market halt, but it was useless. The panic had set in. The data packets Mara had distributed during the night had been independently verified by three different investigative journalists. The evidence was airtight, unassailable, and utterly damning. Julian hadn't just stolen Mara's predictive algorithm; he had falsified its success metrics to secure billions in government contracts.
Her phone buzzed. It was Elias.
"The board of directors is convening an emergency meeting at Vance Tower," he reported. "They are in full panic mode. The CFO just resigned via email and boarded a flight to non-extradition territory. The rest of them are trying to figure out how to stop the bleeding."
"They can't," Mara said, taking a slow sip of her coffee. "Julian built the architecture to ensure no one but him could access the core override protocols. With him incapacitated, the system is actively locking them out to protect itself. It’s a dead man’s switch, and Julian is effectively dead to the network."
"So, we wait?" Elias asked.

"No, Elias. Now, we introduce the cure."
She walked over to her terminal and opened a direct, encrypted video link to the primary boardroom at Vance Industries. She had hardwired a backdoor into their communication infrastructure months ago. It was time to show the board that the ghost they had tried to bury was the only one who could resurrect their dying company. She adjusted the lighting, ensuring her face would be visible but shadowed, projecting absolute authority, and initiated the connection.
