Chapter 10: New Management

A month later, the first snow of winter began to fall over the city, dusting the streets in a layer of pristine white. Aegis Systems had officially launched its flagship predictive algorithm, fully credited to Mara Lin, and the market response was euphoric. The company’s valuation eclipsed what Vance Industries had ever achieved.

Mara sat at the head of the boardroom table. The room that had once hosted a cabal of corrupt executives was now filled with sharp, hungry, and brilliant minds. They were reviewing the quarterly projections, and the numbers were staggering.

"If we implement the new machine-learning protocol by Q2," her new Chief Technology Officer, David, explained, pointing to a holographic projection in the center of the table, "we will outpace our nearest competitor by at least five years."

"Proceed with the implementation," Mara ordered, her voice authoritative but collaborative—a stark contrast to Julian's dictatorial style. "But I want comprehensive ethical reviews at every stage of development. We do not cut corners, and we do not compromise user data. We are building something that lasts."

The meeting adjourned, and the executives filed out, buzzing with energized conversation. Mara remained at the table for a moment alone, listening to the quiet hum of the building. It was her building now. Her company. Her life, restored and elevated beyond anything she had previously imagined.

She stood up and walked out of the boardroom, her heels clicking decisively against the hardwood floor. As she passed the reception desk, she noticed a freshly delivered copy of a major business magazine on the glass table. The cover featured a high-resolution portrait of her, looking directly into the camera with an expression of calm, unwavering strength.

She didn't stop to admire it. There was too much work to be done. The past was finally buried, locked away in a state hospital and a federal prison. Mara stepped into her office, the bronze doors closing securely behind her, ready to build a new empire.
