Chapter 11: The Vultures

Success in the corporate world inevitably attracts vultures, and Victor Thorne was the biggest of them all. As the CEO of OmniCorp, a sprawling, multinational tech conglomerate, Thorne had spent the last decade locked in a bitter rivalry with Julian Vance. With Julian incapacitated and Vance Industries dissolved, Thorne assumed Aegis Systems would be easy prey—a fledgling company run by an engineer who had supposedly stumbled into the CEO's chair through a stroke of vengeful luck.
Thorne requested a meeting under the guise of an "industry partnership." Mara agreed, scheduling it in the very boardroom where she had orchestrated her hostile takeover. When Thorne arrived, he brought a team of five aggressive, silver-haired lawyers. Mara met them alone, accompanied only by Elias standing quietly by the door.
"Mara, it’s a pleasure," Thorne said, offering a patronizing smile as he took the seat opposite her. "I must say, what you managed to pull off with Julian was impressive. But running a multibillion-dollar enterprise is a different game entirely than writing code in a basement."
"Is there a point to this preamble, Victor, or did you just come to test the acoustics of my boardroom?" Mara asked, her voice perfectly even, her hands folded neatly on the polished mahogany table.
Thorne’s smile faltered slightly. He slid a thick, leather-bound portfolio across the table. "OmniCorp is prepared to offer an acquisition buyout. Three billion dollars for Aegis Systems. You step down, take a massive payday, and let the adults handle the government contracts. If you refuse, we will drown your new algorithm in patent litigation. We have more lawyers than you have developers. We will bleed Aegis dry before Q3."
Mara didn’t even glance at the portfolio. Instead, she reached into her blazer, produced a single sheet of paper, and slid it toward Thorne.
"What is this?" Thorne asked, frowning as he picked it up.
"That is a preliminary injunction drafted by the Department of Defense," Mara stated coldly. "When Julian was running this company, he engaged in industrial espionage against OmniCorp. I found the files. However, I also found the files detailing how OmniCorp retaliated by illegally tapping into federal defense servers to steal Julian’s data. The DoD is highly protective of its infrastructure, Victor. If you so much as file a single nuisance lawsuit against Aegis, I will hand the unredacted server logs directly to the Pentagon."
Thorne stared at the paper, the color draining from his face. His lawyers shifted uncomfortably in their expensive suits.

"You have no leverage here, Victor," Mara continued, her eyes locking onto his. "You thought you were dealing with a frightened engineer. You are dealing with the architect who built the walls you couldn't breach. Take your buyout offer, walk out of my building, and never contact my office again."
Thorne opened his mouth to speak, thought better of it, and stood up abruptly. He snatched his portfolio and marched out, his legal team scurrying behind him. Mara took a slow sip of her water. The ecosystem was finally rebalanced.
