Chapter 3 – Dinner Became Their Disaster

Chapter 3 – Dinner Became Their Disaster
At 6:15 p.m., my phone buzzed again.
This time it wasn't Preston.
It was one of my bridesmaids.
"Hannah."
"Maya..."
"You need to see this."
She forwarded a photo from social media.
The Carter family had gone out for dinner.
Smiling.
Laughing.
Pretending nothing had happened.
Eleanor had even posted the caption:
Family first. Always.
I stared at it for exactly three seconds.
Then I smiled.
Dana had excellent timing.
At 6:28 p.m., Preston tried paying the bill.
Declined.
He laughed awkwardly.
"Try again."
Declined.
Another card.
Declined.
The waiter apologized.
Eleanor offered hers.
Frozen.
Richard's card.
Also declined.
Because every authorized account connected to my credit profile had been terminated exactly eighteen minutes earlier.
Witnesses later described the scene as "painfully uncomfortable."
Morgan reportedly accused the restaurant of making a mistake.
The manager politely invited them to call their bank.
Instead, Preston called me.
I answered on speaker while sitting beside my attorney.
"What did you do?"
"I protected my finances."
"You humiliated us."
"No."
"You did that yourself this morning."
Twenty minutes later, another surprise arrived.
A sheriff's deputy delivered legal papers directly to Preston at the restaurant entrance.
Several diners watched.
Phones appeared.
Someone whispered,
"Isn't that the groom from yesterday?"
The deputy didn't care.
He simply asked Preston to sign acknowledging receipt.
Divorce petition.
Emergency protective request.
Notice of preserved evidence.
The wedding had lasted less than twenty-four hours.
That night, Eleanor called my father.
She demanded he "control his daughter."
My father laughed.
"My daughter isn't the problem."
"Your son is."
Then he hung up.

For the first time in years, Eleanor discovered something she couldn't intimidate.
Money that wasn't hers.
