Chapter 19: The Final Betrayal

Chapter 19: The Final Betrayal

For years, Leo Rossi believed Mateo Calder was the one person in the world he could trust without question.

Not because Mateo was perfect.

Not because Mateo had never made mistakes.

But because Mateo had been there.

Through every battle.

Every loss.

Every moment when Leo had nothing left.

Mateo was the man who stood beside him when everyone else walked away.

The man who protected Lily.

The man who helped search for Isabella’s killer.

The man who claimed he was fighting the same enemy.

But now…

The truth was standing in front of him.

On the screen.

With Richard Kensington.

Nobody spoke.

The image remained frozen.

Mateo Calder.

Standing beside the man who destroyed Leo’s family.

Beatrice looked at Leo.

She saw the change in his face.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Something deeper.

Betrayal.

The kind that hurt more because it came from someone you loved.

“No.”

The word came from Mateo himself.

Everyone turned.

Because Mateo was still standing in the room.

The screen showed him somewhere else.

At another time.

Another place.

But the same face.

The same person.

“That’s not possible.”

Richard’s recorded message continued.

“I’ve been waiting twenty years.”

Then the screen went black.

Leo slowly turned toward Mateo.

The room felt heavy.

“Explain.”

Mateo didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

Leo noticed.

“You know what this is.”

Mateo looked down.

“Leo…”

“Explain.”

His voice was colder.

More dangerous.

Mateo took a breath.

“I can explain.”

“Then do it.”

Mateo looked at everyone.

At Beatrice.

At Isabella.

At Elena.

Then back at Leo.

“I never wanted this.”

Leo’s eyes narrowed.

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

Mateo shook his head.

“It isn’t.”

A pause.

“Because the truth is worse.”

Mateo sat down.

For the first time in decades, the strongest man in Leo’s organization looked defeated.

“I wasn’t working for Richard.”

Leo stared.

“Then why were you with him?”

“Because I was trying to destroy him.”

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Mateo continued.

“Twenty years ago, when your father disappeared, I found out something.”

Leo listened carefully.

“Richard had someone inside every organization.”

“Every company.”

“Every family.”

“He wasn’t just watching the Rossi empire.”

“He was watching everyone.”

Mateo looked at Leo.

“I went undercover.”

Leo’s expression changed slightly.

“Twenty years?”

Mateo nodded.

“I needed Richard to trust me.”

“And you let me believe you betrayed me?”

“I had no choice.”

Leo laughed quietly.

A bitter sound.

“No choice.”

The same words everyone had used.

Everyone who hurt him.

Everyone who hid things.

“You all keep saying that.”

Mateo looked at him.

“I tried to tell you.”

“When?”

“After Isabella died.”

Leo froze.

“What?”

“I wanted to tell you everything.”

“But Isabella stopped me.”

Everyone looked at Isabella.

She lowered her eyes.

“She did.”

Leo turned.

“Why?”

Isabella answered softly.

“Because you were broken.”

A pause.

“You wanted revenge.”

“And Richard wanted you angry.”

Mateo nodded.

“If you knew the truth then, you would have attacked everyone.”

“You would have destroyed the wrong people.”

Leo looked away.

Because he knew.

Because that was exactly what he would have done.

“But now,” Mateo said, “things are different.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily changed you.”

The room went quiet.

Mateo looked toward the stairs.

“The old Leo Rossi would have burned the world down.”

“But Lily gave you something Richard never understood.”

“What?”

Mateo looked at him.

“Mercy.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Leo asked the question that mattered.

“Are you working with Richard now?”

Mateo looked hurt.

“No.”

“Then why is he using your image?”

“Because he wants you to doubt everyone.”

Mateo looked at Beatrice.

“He wants Leo alone.”

Suddenly, the security alarms activated.

A warning appeared.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS.

Mateo looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“He found us.”

The mansion lights went dark.

Again.

But this time, everyone knew what it meant.

Richard was inside.

Leo immediately moved.

“Find Lily.”

Beatrice followed.

“I’m coming.”

Leo stopped her.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“They want me.”

“They want the key.”

He shook his head.

“They want to use you.”

Beatrice stepped closer.

“And they want to use you.”

A pause.

“Lily needs both of us.”

They moved through the underground passage.

The same hidden tunnels built by Leo’s grandfather.

The same tunnels where decades of secrets had survived.

Then they heard footsteps.

A figure appeared in the darkness.

Leo raised his weapon.

But stopped.

Because it was not Richard.

It was Victoria.

She looked exhausted.

Terrified.

“I found her.”

Leo stared.

“Where is Lily?”

Victoria looked behind her.

“She’s not with Richard.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Victoria swallowed.

“Richard lied.”

“He never had Lily.”

Leo’s expression changed.

“Then who does?”

Victoria looked at Beatrice.

And whispered:

“The person who has been protecting her this whole time.”

A small voice came from the darkness.

“Daddy?”

Leo turned.

Lily ran toward him.

Safe.

Alive.

He dropped to his knees and hugged her.

“Princess.”

She held onto him tightly.

“I knew you would come.”

Leo closed his eyes.

Relief.

Finally.

Then he noticed something.

Lily was holding a small box.

An old blue box.

The same one from Beatrice’s memory.

Leo looked at Isabella.

She became pale.

“No…”

“What?”

Isabella whispered:

“Richard wasn’t looking for the evidence.”

A pause.

“He was looking for the person who already found it.”

Everyone turned toward Lily.

But the little girl looked confused.

She opened the box.

Inside was a letter.

And one final message.

THE FINAL TRUTH IS NOT ABOUT THE FALCON.

IT IS ABOUT THE PERSON WHO CREATED IT.

Leo looked at the letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

Not Isabella.

Not Marco.

Not Elena.

Someone else.

The signature at the bottom made his blood run cold.

Because it belonged to the person who started everything.

MARCO ROSSI’S FATHER.

The Rossi family secret was older than anyone imagined.

And the final truth…

May you like

Was about to destroy the last thing Leo had left.

His own name.
