Chapter 4: Choosing What Matters

Weeks passed.
Khloe recovered slowly.
Every day Marcus sat beside her hospital bed, refusing to leave unless she insisted he go home and rest.
One quiet afternoon, he placed a small velvet box on her blanket.
Inside wasn't jewelry.
It was every photograph he still had of the two of them—from college, their wedding, and the day they learned they were expecting.
"I almost lost everything," Marcus said.
"I know."
"I spent too much time protecting people who never deserved it."
Khloe squeezed his hand.
"What matters is what you choose now."
Marcus smiled through tears.
"I'm choosing you."
Months later, their son arrived healthy despite the terrifying ordeal.
