While surgeons prepared Khloe for emergency treatment, an older man rushed into the waiting room.
His name was Daniel Carter.
Marcus immediately recognized him from family photographs.
Khloe's uncle.
Daniel had practically raised Khloe after her parents died years earlier.
He wrapped Marcus in a brief embrace before asking the only question that mattered.
"How are they?"
Marcus couldn't meet his eyes.
"I don't know."
Hours later, the lead physician finally emerged.
"The baby is alive," she announced.
Everyone exhaled.
"But Khloe suffered internal injuries. She's stable now, though she'll need weeks of recovery."
Marcus buried his face in his hands.
Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.
"This wasn't an accident."
