The sun began to dip below the western tree line, casting a golden, amber glow across the sprawling roof of the Harrison home. The gentle hum of cicadas filled the warm evening air, blending with the distant sound of children laughing down the block.
Mark stood alone on the front porch, leaning against the wooden railing where he had stood so many times before. He looked out over the quiet, peaceful suburban street. The flashing red and blue lights of that terrifying night felt like a distant, faded memory from another life.
The front door opened quietly, and Eleanor stepped out onto the porch, walking steadily with the aid of her cane. She stopped beside her son, looking out at the sunset with him in comfortable silence for a long moment.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mr. Executive," Eleanor teased softly, nudging his arm with her elbow.
Mark smiled, wrapping a protective arm around his mother's shoulders. "Just thinking about how lucky I am, Mom. And how glad I am that I came home early that day."
