Chapter 13: Shadows on the Inside

Miles away from the warmth of the suburban home, the environment inside the state correctional facility was stark, gray, and unrelenting.
Sarah sat on the lower bunk of a sterile, two-person cell, staring blankly at the chipped green paint of the concrete wall opposite her. The heavy steel door featured a small rectangular window through which the harsh fluorescent hallway light poured in twenty-four hours a day. There were no designer clothes, no imported Italian tiles, and no adoring social circle to validate her existence. Here, she was nothing more than inmate number 488219.
The heavy metal door clanged open, and a corrections officer tossed a gray linen uniform bundle onto the upper bunk.
"Rec time is over in twenty minutes, Harrison," the officer barked without looking back, slamming the door shut with a resounding echo.
Sarah didn't move. Her mind replayed the events of the past few weeks like a broken film reel. She analyzed every miscalculation, every missed detail, every moment where her arrogance had blinded her to the obvious risks. She had spent years believing that she could outsmart everyone around her through sheer manipulation and charm. But her downfall wasn't caused by bad luck or a sudden coincidence; it was the inevitable result of a foundation built entirely on deceit.
A sharp knock on the cell bars startled her. In the neighboring cell, an inmate with hardened eyes and a jagged scar across her cheek peered through the mesh, watching Sarah with a cold, predatory curiosity.

"First time inside, rich girl?" the inmate rasped with a mocking smirk.
Sarah turned her head away, pulling her knees up to her chest. For the first time in her life, she had no witty comeback, no manipulative excuse, and no escape route. She was completely alone in the dark world she had engineered for herself.
