Chapter 18: Behind Closed Doors

Far away from the bright lights and flashing cameras of the foundation launch, the interior of the state correctional facility remained as gray, cold, and unrelenting as ever.
Sarah sat at a steel table in the communal dayroom, staring down at an empty plastic tray. The television mounted high in the corner of the room was tuned to a local news broadcast, replaying footage of the foundation’s press conference.
On the screen, Mark stood tall and confident at the podium, while Eleanor smiled warmly beside him. The graphics on the screen boldly displayed the name The Eleanor Harrison Foundation, highlighting millions of dollars in recovered assets now dedicated to protecting vulnerable seniors.
Sarah’s fingers clenched into tight fists, her nails digging sharply into her palms. The woman on the screen—confident, radiant, and surrounded by a loving family—was the very person she had spent years trying to diminish, silence, and control. Now, her name was a footnote in a legal case file, her assets completely liquidated, her social standing erased, and her freedom restricted to a ten-by-twelve concrete cell for the next several years.

"Hey, new girl, move your tray," a harsh voice grated from behind her, accompanied by the heavy thud of a heavy-soled boot against the floor.
Sarah didn't look up. She slowly pushed the empty tray across the stainless-steel table, her eyes fixed on the blank space where the television screen had just faded to commercial. She had tried to master the world through deception, but the world had outlasted her game.
