Chapter 8 - The Black Box.

David's first instinct was to ask Mia about the drive immediately.
Naomi stopped him before the thought became an action.
"No."
"He just said she gave it to him."
"I heard him."
"Three weeks ago."
"I heard that too."
David paced once across the nursery.
"Then how do I not ask?"
"Because if Mark is lying, you do not introduce his story into Mia's memory before a professional speaks with her."
David stopped.
The logic was painful and obvious.
"Fine."
Naomi returned to the phone.
"Mr. Delaney, your attorney should contact me directly."
Mark sounded tired.
"He will."
"Do not alter or access the drive."
"Too late."
David looked sharply at the phone.
Naomi's face remained composed.
"Explain."
"I copied it."
"When?"
"Three weeks ago."
"Why?"
There was a long pause.
"Because Elena asked me to erase it."
David's hand closed slowly into a fist.
Naomi noticed but continued calmly.
"And did you?"
"No."
"Why not?"
Mark exhaled through his nose.
"Because I'm an idiot, not a monster."
David nearly interrupted.
Naomi gave him a warning glance.
"Start at the beginning," she said.
Mark did.
Six weeks earlier, Elena had called him complaining that David's security system made her feel watched.
Mark worked in commercial IT and understood networking well enough to help create a secondary user account.
That account became E-GUEST.
Elena told him she wanted a way to view cameras without triggering notifications on David's phone.
Mark believed her explanation that she was planning a surprise anniversary gathering and did not want David seeing deliveries or guests.
David almost laughed at the absurdity.
Their anniversary was four months away.
Mark admitted he should have noticed.
Then Elena asked him to show her how to place individual cameras into privacy mode.
He did.
A week later, she asked whether archived clips could be removed.
Mark told her she could not permanently delete cloud backups through E-GUEST but could interrupt local recording through the administrator panel.
"Why did you keep helping her?" David asked.
Mark was quiet.
"Because she's family."
David's voice hardened.
"So is Mia."
Mark did not answer.
Naomi stepped in.
"What happened three weeks ago?"
Mark continued.
Elena invited him to the house while David was attending an industry dinner.
That part of his declaration was true.
The rest was not.
David had never been there.
There had been no argument.
No slammed table.
No threat.
Elena had asked Mark to access the local storage cabinet and remove the drive.
He refused at first.
Then she told him the system had captured a private marital conversation and she wanted it gone before David could use it against her.
Mark still refused to enter the cabinet himself.
So Elena called Mia into the hallway.
"She gave Mia a key," Mark said.
David's stomach turned.
"She sent my daughter into the garage?"
"Yes."
"Alone?"
"I was standing at the side door."
"That's not what I asked."
Mark's voice lowered.
"Yes."
David shut his eyes.
Naomi asked him to continue.
Mia returned carrying the black drive with both hands.
She gave it to Mark because Elena told her it was an old router Uncle Mark needed to repair.
Mia had no idea what it was.
That explained the sentence Mark had used.
Mia gave it to me.
Technically true.
Morally incomplete.
"Then Elena told me to wipe it," Mark said.
"I took it home."
"Why didn't you erase it?" Naomi asked.
"Curiosity."
He sounded ashamed.
"I plugged it into an isolated computer."
"And?"
"There were months of local recordings."
David leaned closer.
"Months?"
"The cloud plan only stores selected motion events."
"The local drive kept more?"
"Continuous low-resolution feeds from the interior cameras."
David looked at Naomi.
This was the archive they had not known existed.
Mark continued.
"I started looking for whatever Elena wanted erased."
"Did you find it?"
"I found too much."
His voice changed.
The casual defensiveness disappeared.
"I saw Mia carrying the baby after school on different days."
David stared at the floor.
"I saw Elena sending her back downstairs when she tried to do homework."
Mark paused.
"I saw Carmen arguing with Elena more than once."
David's jaw tightened.
"And you still said nothing."
"I know."
"You watched it three weeks ago."
"I know."
"And you helped her create the account."
"I know."
David's voice became sharper.
"Then you signed a false declaration saying I threatened her."
Mark went silent.
Naomi stepped between the two men verbally before David lost the restraint he had worked so hard to keep.
"Why did you sign it?"
Mark took a long breath.
"Elena told me if I didn't, she'd say I accessed your security system without authorization and stole the drive."
David laughed once, bitterly.
"You did access it."
"With her credentials and permission."
"And you did take the drive."
"Because she told Mia to hand it to me."
"That doesn't make this better."
"I know."
Mark's repeated answer began to sound less like defense and more like surrender.
Naomi asked whether his attorney knew everything he had just said.
"Yes."
"Including the false declaration?"
"Yes."
"Then your attorney needs to correct the record immediately."
"He said the same thing."
Naomi ended the call after arranging counsel-to-counsel contact.
David remained standing in the nursery.
The small room suddenly felt full of unseen history.
He imagined months of camera footage stored inside a box he had never checked.
He imagined Mia walking through rooms while he sat in airplanes and conference rooms telling himself his family was secure because he could see a few green icons on his phone.
"I installed cameras and thought that meant I was paying attention," he said.
Naomi closed her notebook.
"Cameras are not attention."
David looked at her.
"I know that now."
Mark's attorney delivered the original drive and a forensic copy two days later under a written preservation agreement.
An independent examiner verified the data before anyone began reviewing it.
David did not watch everything.
Naomi would not allow it, and eventually he understood why.
There was no value in forcing himself to absorb every ordinary hour of his children's lives to punish himself for missing them.
The examiner isolated relevant dates and events.
The pattern was clear.
Elena repeatedly used Mia as an after-school caretaker for Leo for periods far beyond what David understood.
She repeatedly disabled or redirected camera notifications before confrontations.
She repeatedly changed her demeanor when David's car entered the gate.
The most painful footage was not dramatic.
One afternoon, Mia sat at the dining table trying to finish homework while rocking Leo's carrier with her foot.
Elena walked past without looking up from her tablet.
Mia whispered, "I have a test tomorrow."
Elena replied, "Then study faster."
David stopped the video.
He could not continue.
Naomi did not ask him to.
The examiner also found something unexpected.
On three evenings, Elena opened David's office door after he left for work and photographed documents on his desk.
The documents were not family records.
They were company financial summaries.
David frowned.
"Why would she photograph those?"
Rachel Kim reviewed the images.
"Most of this is harmless without context."
"Most?"
Rachel pointed to one page.
"This projected acquisition price was confidential at the time."
David's stomach tightened.
"Could she have used it?"
"Maybe."
Naomi raised a hand.
"Different issue."
Rachel nodded.
"Agreed."
But the discovery expanded the problem.
Elena had not only been managing what cameras showed inside the house.
She had been watching David too.
That evening, a corrected declaration from Mark arrived.
He withdrew every allegation that David had threatened Elena three weeks earlier.
He admitted helping create E-GUEST.
He admitted receiving the drive after Elena directed Mia to retrieve it.
And he admitted Elena had asked him to erase the archive.
David read the last paragraph twice.
Mark had added one sentence his attorney apparently allowed him to include.
I did not understand why Elena wanted the recordings destroyed until I reviewed them, and once I understood, I should have acted immediately.
David set the statement down.
He did not forgive Mark.
But for the first time, he believed Mark was finally telling the truth.
Then Naomi received a message from Dr. Benton.
Mia had remembered something important during a routine conversation about the house.
Not about the kitchen.
Not about the strap.
About David's office.
Three months earlier, Mia had seen Elena remove a small silver key from David's desk and make a copy using a mold from a craft kit.
Mia had thought it was for a surprise.
David knew exactly which key it was.
It opened the fireproof drawer where he kept personal trust documents and the children's identity records.
He went to the drawer immediately.
The original key was still on his ring.
The lock showed no damage.
Inside, most files appeared untouched.
Then he counted the folders.
May you like
One was missing.
A thin red folder containing the trust paperwork for the house.
