Chapter 3 - The Phone in the Pantry.

By seven the next morning, the Mercer house had stopped feeling like a home and started feeling like a place where evidence had been left behind.

David hated that thought.

He hated even more that it was accurate.

Mia was still asleep when Naomi Price arrived.

She was in her early fifties, dressed in a navy coat over a gray suit, and carried herself with the calm precision of someone who had walked into hundreds of families at the moment their private lives became legal problems.

Rachel had called her before dawn.

Naomi did not begin with sympathy.

She began with rules.

"Do not coach Mia."

David nodded.

"Do not ask her to repeat the story for relatives, friends, or anyone who does not need to hear it."

"Understood."

"Do not post anything."

"I wouldn't."

"And do not assume that being the calmer parent automatically makes every decision you made last night correct."

David looked at her.

Naomi held his gaze.

"Good people make mistakes when they're scared."

"Then tell me what not to do."

"That's why I'm here."

David respected her immediately.

He showed her the exported security clips, the administrative logs, Elena's text messages, the photographs of the hidden phone, and the sealed envelope.

Naomi reviewed the timestamps without touching the device.

"Who owns this phone?"

"I don't know."

"Then we don't unlock it."

"Even if Carmen put it here for me?"

"We confirm that first."

Naomi looked toward the stairs.

"Where is Mia?"

"Sleeping."

"Let her sleep."

David nodded.

Naomi scrolled through the security log.

"The camera system shows an administrator change at three twenty-nine."

"Yes."

"And footage resumes at four twelve."

"Yes."

"Who was physically in the house during that period?"

"Elena, Mia, Leo, and Carmen."

"Anyone else?"

"Not that I know of."

Naomi looked at him carefully.

"That's going to become an important phrase."

"What is?"

"Not that I know of."

David understood the warning.

Do not fill gaps with assumptions.

Naomi called Carmen from a number David had saved for years.

It went directly to voicemail.

She left a short message asking Carmen to contact her regarding property believed to belong to her.

Then David's phone rang.

Elena.

He looked at Naomi.

"Answer."

David put the call on speaker after telling Elena that Naomi was present.

For a moment, Elena said nothing.

Then her voice became very controlled.

"Who is Naomi?"

Naomi answered herself.

"Naomi Price. I represent David regarding family matters arising from last night."

Elena laughed softly.

"Of course you do."

David leaned against the counter.

"What do you need, Elena?"

"I need to come home."

"Not this morning."

"You don't get to decide that unilaterally."

Naomi lifted one finger, signaling David not to argue.

"Elena," Naomi said, "we can coordinate access to personal belongings without confrontation."

"I don't need permission to enter my house."

"No one is debating property rights on this call."

"Then tell him to stop acting like he owns me."

David closed his eyes briefly.

Naomi stayed calm.

"Is there something specific you need from the property?"

A pause followed.

"My tablet."

David looked toward the small home office beside the dining room.

Elena's tablet usually sat on the desk there.

"Anything else?" Naomi asked.

"No."

"We'll arrange it."

Elena's voice sharpened.

"I want Mia to come with me today."

David's hand tightened around the edge of the counter.

Naomi spoke before he could.

"That is not something we're resolving informally this morning."

"She's my daughter."

"And she is currently safe with her father."

"Safe?"

Elena gave another bitter laugh.

"David barely knows her school schedule."

The words hit, but David stayed silent.

Naomi did not take the bait.

"We will communicate through counsel about temporary arrangements."

Elena's tone changed.

The anger disappeared.

In its place came something soft and wounded.

"David, please."

He looked down at the security timeline on his laptop.

"What?"

"Don't let strangers turn one bad afternoon into the end of our family."

David stared at the forty-three-minute gap.

"Then tell me what happened during the missing footage."

Silence.

Naomi's eyes shifted toward him.

Elena finally answered.

"I told you. I don't know why the cameras failed."

"Did you fire Carmen?"

Another pause.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"She was insubordinate."

"Did you take her phone?"

This time the silence lasted longer.

Naomi wrote something on a yellow legal pad.

"Elena?" David said.

"She was recording me in my own home without permission."

David felt his pulse in his throat.

"So you did take it."

"I took it away from her while she was working."

"Where is it now?"

"I don't know."

"You had it yesterday."

"And I said I don't know where it is now."

Naomi raised her hand again.

David stopped.

"Elena," Naomi said, "please preserve any device or recording in your possession."

"Are you threatening me?"

"I'm giving you a practical request that protects everyone."

Elena ignored her.

"David, let me speak to Mia."

He looked toward the stairs.

"She's asleep."

"Wake her up."

"No."

"You can't keep my child from me."

"I'm not waking her after the night she had."

Elena's voice cracked with anger.

"The night she had because you turned the house upside down."

David stopped breathing for one second.

Naomi's expression remained unreadable.

Then a small voice came from the staircase.

"Dad?"

Mia stood halfway down, dressed in pajamas.

Her eyes were fixed on the phone.

Elena heard her.

"Mia?"

Mia froze.

David ended the call.

He did not wait for Elena's response.

Mia looked at him.

"Was that Mom?"

"Yes."

"Does she want to come back?"

"She wanted to talk to you."

Mia's face went pale.

Naomi stood but did not approach her.

"Hi, Mia. I'm Naomi."

Mia looked at David.

"She's helping me make good decisions," he explained.

Mia considered that.

"Is she a lawyer?"

Naomi smiled slightly.

"I am."

"Mom doesn't like lawyers."

Naomi's smile disappeared.

"You don't need to worry about what your mom likes today."

Mia came the rest of the way downstairs.

David made breakfast while Naomi stayed at the far end of the kitchen island reviewing notes.

For twenty minutes, nobody mentioned the previous night.

Then David's phone rang again.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Mr. Mercer?"

The voice was female and shaky.

"Yes."

"It's Carmen."

David immediately looked at Naomi.

She straightened.

"Carmen, are you okay?"

"I'm fine."

Her voice lowered.

"Is Mia there?"

David glanced across the kitchen.

Mia was spreading strawberry jam across a piece of toast.

"She's here."

Carmen let out a breath.

"Thank God."

Naomi motioned for David to tell Carmen she was on speaker.

He did.

"Ms. Alvarez," Naomi said, "David found an older blue phone in the pantry."

Carmen went silent.

"Is it yours?"

"Yes."

"Did you leave it there intentionally?"

"Yes."

"Do you want it returned to you?"

"Not yet."

Naomi glanced at David.

"Why not?"

Carmen's voice trembled.

"Because that's the only copy she didn't know about."

David's hand stopped over the coffee pot.

"Only copy of what?"

Carmen answered him directly.

"What happened before the cameras came back on."

David felt the room narrow around him.

Naomi asked the next question.

"Can you unlock the phone?"

"Yes."

"Can you come here?"

"No."

Carmen sounded afraid now.

"Not while she's looking for me."

David frowned.

"Elena is looking for you?"

"She called my sister last night."

"What did she want?"

"She said I stole from the house."

Mia dropped her spoon.

The metal clattered against the plate.

David looked at her.

She was staring at the phone.

Carmen continued.

"Mr. Mercer, I never stole anything from you."

"I know."

"She said if I talked to you, she'd report me for taking jewelry."

Naomi's expression sharpened.

"Do not discuss the details of any accusation with anyone except your own attorney or law enforcement if contacted."

"I don't have an attorney."

"We'll help you find independent counsel if needed."

Carmen was quiet.

Then she said something David did not expect.

"There is more than the video."

"What else?" Naomi asked.

"Messages."

"From Elena?"

"Yes."

"To you?"

"Some."

Carmen took a breath.

"But the ones you need to see were not sent to me."

David's eyes narrowed.

"Who were they sent to?"

"I don't know who the person is."

"Then how did you see them?"

"Mrs. Mercer left her old phone charging in the pantry last week."

David looked at the sealed envelope.

Carmen continued.

"A message came up on the screen while I was cleaning."

"What did it say?"

Carmen hesitated.

"It said, 'He still thinks the cameras are for security.'"

David felt the back of his neck go cold.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

May you like

Then Carmen added the sentence that changed the direction of everything.

"But the reply said, 'Good. Keep him watching the wrong rooms.'"
