Chapter 4 - The Knock After Dark.

The message Carmen had seen did not prove who Elena had been talking to.

It did something more dangerous.

It gave David a reason to doubt every camera he had trusted.

Naomi arranged for Carmen to meet them at her office that afternoon instead of returning to the Mercer house.

David did not bring Mia.

He asked Marisol Torres to remain at the property while a trusted sitter stayed with Mia and Leo.

For the first time in years, David canceled an entire workday without explaining himself to anyone beyond his executive assistant.

It felt strange that something so obvious required effort.

At Naomi's office, Carmen arrived through a side entrance wearing jeans, a tan coat, and the exhausted expression of someone who had spent the night looking over her shoulder.

She carried no handbag.

"Mrs. Mercer still has my regular phone," she said before she sat down.

Naomi placed the sealed blue phone on the conference table.

"Is this yours?"

Carmen nodded.

"An old one."

"And you placed it in the pantry?"

"Yes."

"You understand David has not opened it?"

Carmen looked at him.

Something like relief crossed her face.

"Thank you."

Naomi slid the phone toward her.

"You can decide what you want to share."

Carmen unlocked it with a six-digit code.

The home screen opened to a camera application.

There were three videos.

The first was nine minutes long.

The second was twenty-seven minutes.

The third was only forty-six seconds.

Carmen's hand trembled above the screen.

"I started recording when she told Mia to put Leo in the carrier."

David felt his jaw tighten.

"Why?"

"Because Mia had just come home from school."

Carmen looked at him.

"She was tired."

"What happened?"

"Mrs. Mercer said she had a headache and couldn't listen to the baby anymore."

Carmen lowered her eyes.

"She told Mia to keep him quiet while she cleaned up from lunch."

David looked down at the polished conference table.

"And you objected."

"I said I would take Leo."

"Then what?"

Carmen swallowed.

"She told me I was paid to clean, not to interfere with her parenting."

Naomi asked whether Carmen was comfortable playing the footage.

Carmen nodded.

The first video began.

The picture shook because the phone had been partly hidden inside the pocket of Carmen's apron.

The audio was clearer than the image.

Elena's voice filled the conference room.

"Put him on, Mia."

Mia answered from somewhere beyond the frame.

"Can I do my homework first?"

"No."

"I have math."

"Then you should have finished it at school."

David closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

Carmen's own voice was audible.

"I can hold the baby, Mrs. Mercer."

Elena answered immediately.

"I didn't ask you."

A cabinet door shut.

Then Mia spoke again.

"He's hungry."

Elena's tone became clipped.

"Then walk him around until I make the bottle."

There was nothing graphic in the recording.

That somehow made it worse.

It was ordinary.

It sounded like routine.

David watched his daughter move in and out of the edge of the frame with the carrier strapped around her small shoulders.

He counted how many times she adjusted it.

Seven.

The second video began after a brief gap.

This time Elena was visible near the security panel.

She entered the home-admin code.

The camera indicator on the wall screen turned gray.

David leaned closer.

Naomi paused the video.

"That's the system panel?"

"Yes."

"Can we establish the time?"

Carmen pointed to the oven clock in the background.

3:29.

Exactly when the system log recorded the administrative change.

Naomi resumed the video.

Elena turned toward Carmen.

"Now you can stop acting like everything needs an audience."

Carmen's recorded voice answered.

"I didn't say anything about the cameras."

"You keep looking at them."

"Because you're upset."

"I'm tired of people in this house watching me."

David glanced at Naomi.

The attorney wrote quickly.

The footage shifted.

Mia appeared carrying Leo and collecting plates from the dining table one at a time.

Carmen tried again to intervene.

Elena ordered her to leave the kitchen.

Carmen refused.

Then the argument changed.

Elena accused Carmen of undermining her.

Carmen said Mia was a child, not household staff.

Elena's face hardened.

"Get out."

"I'll leave after Mr. Mercer comes home."

"You don't work for him."

"I work for this family."

Elena stepped closer.

"Not anymore."

The camera image tilted suddenly.

Carmen later explained that Elena had grabbed for her regular phone after noticing it in her hand.

The recording became mostly sound.

A drawer slammed.

Mia cried out for them to stop arguing.

Then Carmen's voice came close to the microphone.

"Mia, go upstairs."

Elena answered sharply.

"She stays here."

David's chest tightened.

Naomi paused the video again.

"Do you want to continue?"

David looked at Carmen.

"Do you?"

Carmen nodded.

The last portion showed Carmen backing toward the pantry.

She placed the old blue phone behind the cabinet while Elena was still holding Carmen's regular phone.

Then Elena opened the garage door and told Carmen to leave.

The video ended.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Naomi finally asked about the third clip.

Carmen looked uncomfortable.

"That one recorded after I left."

David stared at her.

"How?"

"I thought I stopped it."

She opened the forty-six-second file.

The frame was almost completely dark because the phone was hidden behind the cabinet.

Only audio remained.

Footsteps crossed the pantry.

Then Elena spoke.

"Mia, come here."

A pause.

"I said come here."

Mia's voice was small.

"I have Leo."

"Then bring him."

More footsteps.

Then Elena said a sentence David would remember for years.

"If your father asks what happened, you're going to tell him Carmen lost her temper and scared you."

Mia did not answer.

Elena continued.

"Do you understand?"

A whisper followed.

"Yes."

The recording ended.

David did not move.

Naomi reached over and turned the phone face down.

"We have enough for today."

David stared at the black screen.

"No."

Naomi looked at him.

"Enough evidence for today," he clarified.

His voice sounded unlike his own.

"Not enough answers."

Carmen wiped her eyes quickly.

"I'm sorry."

David looked at her.

"For what?"

"I should have called you sooner."

"So should I."

Carmen frowned.

"Called me?"

David shook his head.

"Called home."

He stood and walked to the window.

Below them, traffic moved through the city as if nothing in his life had changed.

Naomi joined him a moment later.

"Guilt is going to make you impulsive if you let it."

"I'm not feeling impulsive."

"That's what worries me."

David looked at her.

Naomi lowered her voice.

"People who are furious and quiet often convince themselves they're being rational."

David absorbed that.

"What do I do?"

"Go home."

"And?"

"Take care of your children."

It sounded almost insultingly simple.

Naomi continued.

"Let me do the legal work."

David nodded.

He returned home before dinner.

Mia was on the floor in the family room building a tower of wooden blocks while Leo lay on a play mat beside her.

When David entered, she looked up immediately.

He smiled.

Not because he felt like smiling.

Because he wanted her to know she did not have to read his face for danger.

"Hey."

"Hey."

"How was the afternoon?"

"Leo knocked down my tower."

David looked at the baby.

"Sounds serious."

Mia almost smiled.

It was the first ordinary moment since the previous day.

They ate grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner because David realized halfway through cooking that he had no idea how Elena made the soup Mia liked.

Mia ate two sandwiches anyway.

At eight thirty, David tucked her into bed.

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

"Did Mrs. Alvarez tell you?"

David sat on the edge of the mattress.

"She told me enough."

Mia stared at the ceiling.

"Are you mad at Mom?"

David considered the question carefully.

"I'm upset about choices she made."

"That's a yes."

He almost smiled.

"Yes."

Mia was quiet.

"I still love her."

"You can."

She looked at him.

"Even if you're mad?"

"You don't have to choose one feeling."

Her eyes filled, but she did not cry.

"Okay."

David kissed her forehead and turned off the lamp.

At eleven fifty-eight, the doorbell rang.

David was awake in his study.

He checked the exterior camera before moving.

Two uniformed police officers stood on the porch.

His stomach tightened.

He opened the door after confirming their badges through the intercom.

"Mr. Mercer?"

"Yes."

The older officer spoke calmly.

"We received a request for a welfare check involving two minor children at this residence."

David stared at him.

"From whom?"

The officer did not answer directly.

He did not need to.

David stepped back and called Naomi before saying another word.

Within three minutes, she was on speakerphone.

David cooperated.

The officers saw both children sleeping safely.

They viewed enough of the security footage to understand why Elena was not currently in the home.

They asked David whether anyone had been threatened.

He said no.

They asked whether Elena had been prevented from taking personal belongings.

He said no and explained the supervised retrieval plan.

Then the younger officer looked at his notes.

"Mrs. Mercer also reported that you shoved her during the confrontation."

David went completely still.

Naomi spoke through the phone.

"Officer, David has video of the kitchen encounter."

David opened the clip.

There it was.

He stepped between Elena and Mia.

Elena advanced.

He redirected her arm and moved her one step back.

The full clip made the context clear.

The officer watched twice.

"Thank you."

He closed his notebook.

"We'll document the welfare check."

David nodded.

The officers left at twelve twenty-six.

David locked the door and leaned against it.

Naomi was still on speaker.

"She moved faster than I expected," David said.

"So did you."

"What happens now?"

"Now we assume every move will be presented in the least favorable way possible."

David looked at the camera above the foyer.

"She knows the cameras can protect me."

Naomi's answer came quietly.

"Which means she'll try to make the cameras look untrustworthy."

David's phone buzzed.

An email had arrived from an address he did not recognize.

Subject: YOU SHOULD SEE WHAT HE DID.

There was one video attachment.

David opened it.

The clip showed only four seconds from the kitchen.

David stepping toward Elena.

His hand making contact with her arm.

Elena moving backward.

No Mia.

No strap.

No context.

Just four seconds designed to make him look like the aggressor.

Naomi heard his silence.

"What is it?"

David stared at the edited clip.

"Exactly what you said."

He forwarded it to her.

Then he looked toward the staircase where his children slept.

Elena was no longer arguing inside the house.

May you like

She had started building a different version of what happened.

And someone was helping her do it.
