Chapter 2: A Father's Instinct

The joyful sound of the string quartet suddenly felt distant.
Ethan Bennett stood frozen in the center of the ballroom, his eyes searching every corner of the room. Just moments ago, he had been preparing to walk down the aisle. Now, nothing mattered except finding his daughter.
"Lily!" he called, his voice rising above the chatter.
Several guests turned, confused by the urgency in his tone.
His best man, Michael, hurried over. "What's going on?"
"I can't find Lily."
Michael's expression immediately changed. "I'll check downstairs."
Within seconds, family members and members of the wedding staff spread throughout the hotel, searching every hallway, restroom, and lounge.
Rebecca knelt beside the flower girls.
"Have either of you seen Lily?"
One little girl nodded.
"I saw her go upstairs. She looked scared."
Rebecca's heart skipped a beat.
She immediately called Ethan.
"She's upstairs!"
Without another word, Ethan sprinted toward the grand staircase, ignoring the surprised looks from guests. His polished dress shoes echoed against the marble steps as panic tightened his chest.
"Lily!" he shouted.
No answer.
He searched one room after another.
The bridal suite.
The library.
The private lounge.
Empty.
His breathing grew heavier with every passing second.
Memories flooded his mind—Sarah lying in a hospital bed, weak but smiling.
"Promise me something," she had whispered.
"Anything."
"No matter what happens... Lily always comes first."
He had taken her hand.
"I promise."
That promise echoed in his ears now.
Back downstairs, Emily glanced at the elegant gold watch on her wrist.
"The ceremony should have started by now," she complained.
The wedding planner approached nervously.
"Ms. Hart... the groom is searching for Lily."
Emily rolled her eyes.
"Honestly, people are overreacting. She's probably hiding somewhere for attention."
The planner frowned.
"She is only eight years old."
Emily shrugged.
"Exactly. Children create drama."
Nearby, Ethan's mother overheard the conversation. Her stomach turned.
"What do you mean, drama?" she asked sharply.
Emily forced a smile.
"I simply mean children can be emotional."
Before anyone could respond, a faint sound drifted through the upstairs hallway.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
It was almost too quiet to hear.
Ethan stopped walking.
He held his breath.
There it was again.
A weak knocking.
Coming from the far end of the hallway.
He followed the sound until he reached a pair of floor-to-ceiling velvet curtains covering the glass doors that led to a private balcony.
His heart pounded.
"Lily?"
A tiny voice answered from the other side.
"Daddy..."
The word was barely audible.
Ethan ripped the curtains apart.
His blood ran cold.
On the other side of the glass stood Lily, her face pale, her lips turning blue. Tiny hands pressed desperately against the frozen door as tears streamed down her cheeks. She was shaking so violently she could barely remain standing.
"Daddy..."
The door wouldn't open.
It was locked.
For one terrifying second, Ethan couldn't breathe.
Then pure instinct took over.
He grabbed the handle with both hands and pulled with all his strength.
Nothing.
His panic exploded into fury.
He stepped back, slammed his shoulder into the heavy glass door, and with a deafening crack, the damaged lock finally gave way.
The door flew open.
A blast of icy wind rushed into the hallway.
Without hesitation, Ethan wrapped Lily in his white dinner jacket and pulled her tightly into his arms.
She buried her face against his chest, crying uncontrollably.
"I thought... you weren't coming..."
Ethan held her even closer.
"I'm here now," he whispered, his own voice breaking. "I will always come for you."
As he carried his trembling daughter back inside, his eyes lifted toward the hallway.
Standing only a few feet away...
May you like
Emily watched in complete silence.
There wasn't a trace of concern on her face.
