The painful memories of the frozen balcony had become a chapter in Ethan and Lily's lives—not the story that defined them.
Eleven-year-old Lily Bennett stood confidently on the front porch, adjusting the backpack slung over her shoulders.
"Ready?" Ethan called as he locked the front door.

"Daddy?"

"Can I ask you something?"

"Yes."
She looked down.
"Would it be better?"
He gently shook his head.
"No."
She looked surprised.

He took her hand.
