Chapter 1: The Balcony

The music floated through the grand ballroom as guests settled into rows of white chairs decorated with ivory roses. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, casting warm light across polished marble floors. Every detail of the luxury wedding had been planned to perfection, and the bride intended to make sure nothing disrupted her big day.
Emily Hart stood in front of a full-length mirror, smoothing the front of her satin wedding gown. She admired her flawless makeup and carefully adjusted the diamond earrings hanging from her ears. To everyone watching, she looked calm and radiant.
But behind the elegant drapes at the end of the upstairs hallway, eight-year-old Lily Bennett trembled uncontrollably.
She hugged herself tightly against the freezing wind sweeping across the glass balcony. Her thin pink dress, chosen for the ceremony, offered almost no protection from the bitter cold. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she pounded softly on the locked glass door.
"Daddy?" she whispered, her voice shaking. "Please... let me in."
No one heard her.
Just fifteen minutes earlier, Lily had wandered upstairs searching for her father after becoming overwhelmed by the crowd downstairs. Instead, she found Emily.
The bride's smile disappeared the moment she saw the frightened little girl.
"You've caused enough distractions today," Emily had said coldly.
"I just want my dad."
"You'll survive a few minutes alone."
Before Lily could answer, Emily guided her onto the balcony, stepped back inside, and quietly locked the door.
Lily stared through the glass in disbelief.
"You can't leave me out here!"
Emily glanced at her expensive watch without showing the slightest concern.
"Stop crying," she said through the glass. "Your father needs to focus on marrying me, not babysitting you."
Then she pulled the curtains closed.
Now Lily stood alone, shivering so violently that her knees began to buckle.
Downstairs, Ethan Bennett greeted relatives with polite smiles, completely unaware that his daughter was missing.
Ever since his wife, Sarah, had died three years earlier after a long battle with cancer, Lily had become the center of his world. He had promised Sarah in her final days that he would always protect their little girl.
Today was supposed to be the beginning of a new chapter.
Instead, it was quietly becoming the worst day of his life.
As the wedding coordinator announced that the ceremony would begin in five minutes, Ethan looked around the ballroom.
His smile faded.
"Has anyone seen Lily?" he asked.
Several guests shook their heads.
"I thought she was with you," his sister Rebecca answered.
A strange feeling settled deep in Ethan's chest.
Lily never wandered off without telling someone.
He pulled out his phone and called her small smartwatch.
No answer.
Again.
Still nothing.
Rebecca noticed the growing panic in his eyes.
"Ethan... what's wrong?"
He scanned the crowded ballroom one more time.
"My daughter is missing."

For the first time that afternoon, the celebration no longer felt like a wedding.
It felt like the calm before a storm.
