Chapter 8: The Man with the Raven Ring

Chapter 8: The Man with the Raven Ring

The flames swallowed the east wing of the mansion.

Orange light flickered across the snow-covered lawn.

Smoke poured into the winter sky.

Adrien stood frozen in front of the security monitor.

The image replayed again.

And again.

The man in the black coat.

The silver raven ring.

The slow smile before disappearing into the darkness.

It wasn't the smile of someone escaping.

It was the smile of someone delivering a message.

Samuel Grayson lowered his head.

"He's letting us know he was here."

Adrien turned sharply.

"You know him."

Samuel remained silent.

"You recognized the ring."

"I recognized what it represents."

"That's not what I asked."

Samuel took a long breath.

"I've never met the man."

"But twenty-five years ago, I represented a businessman whose company was destroyed by the Black Raven Circle."

Lily looked up.

"What is the Black Raven Circle?"

No one answered immediately.

Finally, Cora knelt beside her.

"They're bad people, sweetheart."

"They steal."

"They lie."

"And they hurt families."

Lily frowned.

"Then why doesn't someone stop them?"

The innocence of the question cut through the room.

Adrien wished the answer were simple.

"Sometimes," he said quietly, "the hardest people to stop are the ones hiding in plain sight."

The head of security interrupted.

"Sir."

"The fire department is on the property."

"The east wing has been evacuated."

"What about the library?"

The guard looked down.

"I'm afraid..."

"The fire started exactly where the black envelope was opened."

Samuel closed his eyes.

"He wanted the evidence destroyed."

Adrien looked toward him.

"But we still have the envelope."

Samuel nodded.

"Yes."

"And that means he failed."

Adrien carefully reached inside his jacket.

The black envelope was still there.

Untouched.

He had slipped it into his inside pocket before leaving the library.

The intruder had burned the room.

But not the evidence.

For the first time all evening, Adrien allowed himself a small breath of relief.

It lasted less than five seconds.

Another security officer rushed into the panic room.

"Sir!"

"We've completed facial recognition."

Adrien frowned.

"From the cameras?"

"Yes."

"We enhanced the image before the suspect left the property."

"And?"

The officer hesitated.

"The software found a partial match."

"Who?"

The officer swallowed.

"We don't have a name."

"We only have an old government file."

Samuel's face grew tense.

"What file?"

The officer looked at his tablet.

"It was sealed twenty-two years ago."

"The subject was listed as deceased."

Adrien's eyes narrowed.

"Show me."

The officer handed him the tablet.

A grainy photograph appeared.

The man looked younger.

Maybe forty.

Dark hair.

Sharp features.

Cold eyes.

On his right hand...

The same raven ring.

Below the photograph, one line stood out.

Status: Presumed Dead.

Lily quietly moved closer to Cora.

"Dead people don't walk."

"No."

Cora whispered.

"They don't."

Adrien handed the tablet to Samuel.

"Do you recognize him?"

Samuel stared at the photograph.

His face slowly drained of color.

"I don't believe this."

"You know him."

Samuel nodded once.

"I thought he died in a warehouse fire."

"What was his name?"

Samuel looked directly at Adrien.

"Lucas Kane."

The name meant nothing to Adrien.

But it clearly meant something to Samuel.

"He was brilliant."

"He built companies."

"He bought politicians."

"He destroyed competitors without ever touching them."

"And when authorities finally investigated..."

"They found nothing."

"Because everyone who could testify..."

Samuel stopped.

Adrien finished the sentence.

"Disappeared."

Samuel nodded.

"Or changed their stories."

The room fell silent.

Cora suddenly spoke.

"I've heard that name."

Everyone turned toward her.

"You have?"

She nodded slowly.

"Evelyn said it once."

"When?"

"A few weeks before she became sick."

"What did she say?"

Cora closed her eyes, searching her memory.

"She was reading documents in the kitchen."

"I brought her tea."

"She looked frightened."

"She didn't know I was standing there."

"What did you hear?"

Cora opened her eyes.

"She whispered..."

"'If Lucas Kane is involved, then it's already bigger than I imagined.'"

Adrien felt his stomach tighten.

His wife had known the name.

She had never mentioned it to him.

Why?

What had she been trying to protect?

Before anyone could speak again, Lily tugged gently on Adrien's sleeve.

"Daddy."

He looked down.

"What is it?"

"I remember something."

Every adult in the room became still.

Samuel leaned forward.

"What do you remember, sweetheart?"

Lily frowned as she concentrated.

"It was snowing."

Adrien exchanged a quick glance with Cora.

"The same night?"

Lily nodded.

"I woke up because Mommy was crying."

The room grew silent.

"I walked downstairs."

"I wasn't supposed to."

"What did you see?"

Lily squeezed her eyes shut.

"There was a man."

Adrien's heartbeat accelerated.

"Can you remember his face?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"He wore a long black coat."

Samuel looked at Adrien.

The description matched.

Lily continued.

"Mommy told me to hide behind the stairs."

"So I did."

"What happened then?"

Lily's voice became very quiet.

"The man gave Mommy a black envelope."

Adrien stared at her.

"The same one?"

"I think so."

"And then?"

Lily hesitated.

"He wasn't alone."

The room froze.

Adrien slowly knelt in front of his daughter.

"There was someone else?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Who?"

"I couldn't see."

"They were standing behind Daddy."

Adrien's blood ran cold.

"Behind... me?"

"You came home."

"You were talking to another man."

"You never saw the man in the black coat."

"You walked right past him."

Adrien shook his head.

"That's impossible."

"I would've remembered."

Lily looked into his eyes.

"You couldn't."

"Why not?"

"Because..."

She pointed toward the shattered security monitor showing the burning library.

"...you were hugging Uncle Daniel."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

No one breathed.

No one moved.

Samuel slowly closed his eyes.

Cora covered her mouth.

The head of security looked at Adrien in disbelief.

Lily's small voice broke the silence.

"Uncle Daniel told me to go upstairs."

"He smiled."

May you like

"But Mommy..."

"...looked terrified."
