Chapter 11: The Empty Safety Deposit Box

Chapter 11: The Empty Safety Deposit Box

The room fell into stunned silence.

No one moved.

No one even seemed to breathe.

Adrien stared at the security officer.

"Say that again."

The officer swallowed.

"The bank's records show that Safety Deposit Box 314 was accessed thirty-seven minutes ago."

"The person signed in as Daniel Mercer."

Adrien's jaw tightened.

"Did the bank verify his identity?"

"They scanned a driver's license."

"And?"

"The records indicate the identification matched."

Samuel Grayson frowned.

"Or appeared to match."

Adrien looked at him.

"You think it was fake?"

Samuel nodded.

"Daniel has resources."

"If he planned this for years, creating false identification would have been the easiest part."

Adrien grabbed his coat.

"We're going to the bank."

The head of security hesitated.

"Sir."

"The building is closed."

"Then they'll open it."

Within minutes, three black SUVs rolled out of the Vance estate.

Snow covered the quiet streets of Greenwich.

Police cruisers remained behind to secure the mansion.

Lily sat beside Cora in the back seat.

She leaned her head against the elderly cook's shoulder.

"I'm tired."

"I know, sweetheart."

Cora gently stroked her hair.

"You've been very brave today."

Lily looked out the frosted window.

"I wish Mommy were here."

Cora smiled through tears.

"So do I."

Adrien heard every word.

Each one felt heavier than the last.

For years, he had believed money could protect the people he loved.

Tonight had proven how wrong he had been.

The convoy pulled into the parking lot of Greenwich National Trust.

The historic stone building stood dark against the winter sky.

Only one office light remained on.

A security manager waited at the entrance.

He nervously adjusted his tie as Adrien approached.

"Mr. Vance."

"I'm terribly sorry about the circumstances."

Adrien didn't waste time.

"Take me to Box 314."

The manager nodded immediately.

"This way."

They descended into the underground vault.

Massive steel doors opened one after another.

Electronic locks clicked.

Security cameras followed every movement.

Finally, they reached a private viewing room.

The manager carefully removed a long metal drawer from the vault.

Box 314.

He placed it on the table.

Adrien inserted the brass key.

The lock clicked open.

He slowly lifted the lid.

Empty.

No papers.

No jewelry.

No photographs.

Nothing.

Lily frowned.

"Where is everything?"

No one answered.

Samuel carefully examined the inside of the box.

His fingers traced the velvet lining.

Then he stopped.

"Wait."

He pressed gently against one corner.

A tiny wooden panel shifted.

"A false bottom."

Adrien leaned closer.

Samuel carefully lifted the hidden compartment.

Inside rested a single folded envelope.

Nothing else.

The front read:

If Daniel gets here first, this letter is for Adrien.

Adrien felt his heartbeat quicken.

He unfolded the letter.

Evelyn's handwriting greeted him once again.

My dearest Adrien,

If this letter is the only thing left inside this box, then Daniel has already taken what he came for.

Adrien's grip tightened.

Samuel quietly looked away.

Adrien continued reading.

Please don't waste time wondering why I didn't tell you sooner.

I wanted to.

More than anything.

But I was afraid that the moment you knew the truth... you would try to stop them yourself.

His throat tightened.

She knew him too well.

He kept reading.

The documents that were originally inside this box prove that someone inside Vance Global has been selling company secrets for years.

The evidence also connects that person to Lucas Kane.

Richard Bennett shifted uneasily.

Michael noticed.

"Dad?"

Richard didn't answer.

Adrien continued.

If those files are missing, then someone has been watching this box.

That means there is a traitor much closer than either of us imagined.

The final paragraph stopped Adrien cold.

Don't trust anyone simply because they loved me.

Some people loved my name more than they loved me.

The letter ended with three words.

Forgive yourself first.

Adrien lowered the paper.

His vision blurred.

Cora quietly stepped beside him.

"She never blamed you."

Adrien closed his eyes.

"I blamed myself enough for both of us."

The room remained silent.

The bank manager finally spoke.

"Mr. Vance."

"There is... one more thing."

Adrien looked up.

"What?"

"The man who accessed this box."

"Yes?"

"He wasn't alone."

Samuel's expression sharpened.

"There was another person?"

The manager nodded.

"Our cameras captured two visitors."

"Can we see the footage?"

"Of course."

Minutes later, the surveillance video played on a monitor.

Daniel Mercer entered first.

He wore a dark overcoat and sunglasses.

His face was clearly visible.

He unlocked Box 314.

Removed a thick folder.

Closed the box.

Then he stepped aside.

Another man entered the camera frame.

His face remained hidden beneath a black hat.

But one detail stood out instantly.

A silver ring engraved with a raven.

Lucas Kane.

Samuel whispered the name before anyone else could.

The video continued.

Lucas didn't take the folder.

Instead...

He handed Daniel a sealed envelope.

Daniel looked inside.

His expression changed.

He seemed shocked.

Then—

To everyone's surprise—

Daniel shook his head.

He argued with Lucas.

The two men exchanged heated words.

There was no audio.

Only gestures.

Pointing.

Frustration.

Anger.

Finally, Lucas grabbed Daniel by the collar.

He leaned close.

Said something.

Daniel's shoulders slumped.

Then he nodded.

Lucas released him.

The two men walked away together.

The video ended.

Adrien stared at the frozen screen.

"Daniel looked terrified."

Samuel nodded slowly.

"He did."

Lily tugged gently on Cora's sleeve.

"They weren't friends."

"No."

Cora whispered.

"They weren't."

Adrien replayed the argument in his mind.

Something didn't fit.

If Daniel had betrayed him willingly...

Why had he looked frightened?

Why argue?

Why hesitate?

The answer came from the bank manager.

"There is one final camera."

Adrien looked over.

"What does it show?"

"The parking garage."

The footage appeared.

Lucas and Daniel exited together.

A black sedan waited nearby.

Lucas opened the rear door.

Daniel didn't get inside.

Instead...

He tried to run.

Three seconds later—

A third man stepped out from behind a concrete pillar.

He struck Daniel across the head.

Daniel collapsed instantly.

Lucas smiled.

Together, the two men dragged Daniel into the back seat.

The sedan sped away.

The video froze.

No one spoke.

The traitor who had haunted Adrien's family for years...

Had just become someone else's prisoner.

Then the security officer's radio crackled.

His face turned pale as he listened.

He looked at Adrien.

"Sir..."

Adrien met his eyes.

"What now?"

The officer took a slow breath.

"The police have searched Daniel Mercer's house."

"And?"

"They found a handwritten note on his kitchen table."

Adrien's pulse quickened.

"What did it say?"

The officer looked down at his notebook.

May you like

"It says..."

'If I'm taken... don't let them reach Lily before Cora tells her the truth.'
