Chapter 5: The Hidden Voice

Chapter 5: The Hidden Voice
No one in the library moved.
The words hung in the air like ice.

One inside Lily's bedroom.
Adrien felt a wave of anger unlike anything he had experienced in years.
Not during hostile takeovers.
Not during billion-dollar lawsuits.
Not even when competitors had tried to destroy his company.
This was different.
Someone had invaded his daughter's world.
Someone had listened to her bedtime stories.
Her nightmares.
Her tears.
His voice became frighteningly calm.
"Seal the house."
The head of security nodded immediately.
"Yes, sir."
"No one enters."
"No one leaves."
Within seconds, guards spread through the mansion.
Heavy doors locked automatically.
The electronic security system switched into emergency mode.
A soft chime echoed through every hallway.
Richard Bennett looked offended.
"Surely this isn't necessary."
Adrien slowly turned toward him.
"My daughter's bedroom was bugged."
"I consider this necessary."
Richard fell silent.
Samuel Grayson remained near the fireplace.
He watched Adrien with quiet understanding.
"This is exactly what Evelyn feared."
Adrien looked at him.
"You keep saying that."
"What exactly did my wife know?"
Samuel hesitated.
"I can only tell you what she allowed me to know."
"Then start talking."
Samuel nodded.
"Evelyn came to my office two years before she died."
"She wasn't there to update her will."
"She wanted protection."
"From whom?"
"I asked the same question."
"And?"
"She refused to answer."
Lily squeezed Cora's hand tighter.
The little girl looked frightened.
Cora gently brushed a strand of hair away from Lily's face.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
"No."
Lily whispered.
"It isn't."
Cora couldn't argue.
Because Lily was right.
Nothing felt safe anymore.
The head of security returned.
"Mr. Vance."
"We've swept the entire first floor."
Adrien looked up.
"How many?"
"Nine devices."
The room froze.
"Nine?"
"Yes, sir."
"Professional-grade equipment."
"They weren't purchased online."
"They were installed by someone with experience."
Adrien's expression darkened.
"Continue searching."
The guard nodded and disappeared again.
Samuel looked at the old cook.
"Cora."
She met his eyes.
"You were right."
"I know."
"I should have come sooner."
"You were protecting Evelyn."
"I was."
Richard sighed loudly.
"This has absolutely nothing to do with us."
Adrien looked at him.
"I haven't accused you."
"But you looked at us."
"I looked at everyone."
Michael stepped forward.
"You're making a mistake."
"Maybe."
Adrien replied.
"But I intend to find out."
The library door opened again.
The house manager hurried inside.
He carried a small cardboard box.
"Sir."
"We found this inside Miss Lily's closet."
Adrien frowned.
"I've never seen that before."
"Neither have I."
The manager placed it carefully on the table.
The box was dusty.
Unmarked.
No lock.
No label.
Only a faded blue ribbon tied around it.
Lily tilted her head.
"Is it mine?"
"No."
Cora whispered.
"I've seen that ribbon before."
Everyone looked at her.
"It belonged to Evelyn."
Adrien's heartbeat quickened.
He untied the ribbon.
Inside were photographs.
Letters.
A silver music box.
And a small digital voice recorder.
Samuel stared at it.
"I remember that."
"Evelyn carried it everywhere."
Adrien carefully picked it up.
The battery light was still blinking.
"It still works."
His thumb hovered over the play button.
No one spoke.
He pressed it.
Static filled the room.
Then...
A familiar voice.
Soft.
Warm.
Gentle.
Evelyn.
"If you're listening to this..."
"...then something happened."
Lily gasped.
"Mommy."
The little girl burst into tears.
Cora immediately knelt beside her.
Adrien stood completely still.
For the first time in eighteen months...
He heard his wife's voice.
"I hope I'm wrong."
"I truly do."
"But if I'm not..."
"...please listen carefully."
The recording crackled.
"I believe someone close to our family has been stealing information from Vance Global."
Adrien's eyes widened.
"I don't have proof."
"Not yet."
"But I found transactions that don't make sense."
"Someone has access to things only a handful of people should know."
Samuel quietly lowered his head.
He had heard this recording before.
Only once.
Years ago.
Evelyn continued.
"If you're hearing this, then I probably never had the chance to tell you in person."
"I'm sorry."
"I wanted to protect you."
"I wanted to protect Lily."
The recording paused briefly.
As if Evelyn had stopped to collect herself.
"If anything ever happens to me..."
"...promise me one thing."
Adrien whispered before the recording could.
"I know."
But he didn't.
Evelyn's next words shattered him.
"Don't trust people simply because they've been beside you for years."
"Time does not create loyalty."
"Character does."
The recording ended with a soft click.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Lily buried her face against Cora's shoulder.
"I miss her."
"I know."
Cora whispered through tears.
"So do I."
Adrien slowly looked through the photographs inside the box.
Most were ordinary family memories.
Birthday parties.
Christmas mornings.
Vacations.
Then one picture caught his attention.
It showed Evelyn standing outside a small café.
She wasn't alone.
Standing beside her...
Smiling warmly...
Was the Vance family's longtime Chief Financial Officer.
Daniel Mercer.
Adrien frowned.
"Why would Evelyn keep this?"
Samuel stepped closer.
He studied the photograph.
His face suddenly lost all color.
"Oh, no."
Adrien looked at him sharply.
"What?"
Samuel pointed at the date stamped in the corner.
"This picture..."
"...was taken the day before Evelyn came to my office."
Adrien felt another chill.
Daniel Mercer had been his closest executive for fifteen years.
His most trusted advisor.
The man who knew every financial detail of the company.
The man Adrien had considered almost family.
Before anyone could say another word—
The head of security rushed back into the library.
His breathing was uneven.
"Sir..."
"What now?"
"We've identified one of the fingerprints from the listening devices."
Adrien's jaw tightened.
"Whose?"
The guard swallowed hard.
"The print belongs to someone who has unrestricted access to this estate."
Adrien's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Tell me."
The guard looked him straight in the eye.
"It's..."
"...your Chief Financial Officer, Daniel Mercer."
And at that exact moment, Adrien's phone began ringing.

The caller ID displayed a single name.
Daniel Mercer.
