Chapter 7: The Whistleblower

Chapter 7: The Whistleblower

The rain had not stopped for three days.

Chicago seemed covered in a permanent gray blanket, the kind of weather that made people stay indoors and forget the world outside.

But inside Carter's Table, the lights were always warm.

The smell of fresh coffee filled the air.

Customers laughed.

Plates moved across tables.

And behind the counter, Evelyn Carter stood exactly where she had stood for twenty-three years.

The difference was that now, people weren't just coming for meatloaf and apple cobbler.

They were coming because they believed in her.

By Friday morning, the story had spread far beyond the neighborhood.

Local news stations had started asking questions.

Social media posts supporting Hannah had reached thousands of people.

Former employees of Holloway Select Markets were quietly contacting Richard Lawson.

And every new person who stepped forward made the Holloways more nervous.

But Richard knew something.

Public attention was not enough.

They needed proof.

Something undeniable.

Something that couldn't be buried behind expensive lawyers and carefully prepared statements.

At 8:15 a.m., Richard received a call.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

"Richard Lawson."

A nervous male voice responded.

"Mr. Lawson?"

"Yes."

"My name is Daniel Brooks."

Richard sat up.

"Daniel, what happened?"

"I need to meet with you again."

"Why?"

A long pause followed.

Then Daniel whispered:

"Because the documents I gave you were only the beginning."

An hour later, Daniel arrived at Carter's Table.

This time, he looked worse.

His suit was wrinkled.

His eyes were tired.

He kept looking out the window as if expecting someone to follow him.

Evelyn noticed.

"Are you okay?"

Daniel forced a smile.

"I haven't slept much."

Richard motioned toward the booth.

"Sit down."

Daniel placed a thick folder on the table.

"I found this before they fired me."

Richard opened it.

Inside were dozens of pages marked:

CONFIDENTIAL — EXECUTIVE ONLY

"What is this?" Hannah asked.

Daniel looked at her.

"This is how they controlled people."

He pointed to the documents.

"Grant and Margaret didn't just threaten employees."

"They built a system."

Richard began reading.

The files contained private investigations into employees.

Personal information.

Family details.

Financial struggles.

Everything the Holloways could use as leverage.

Evelyn felt sick.

"They collected people's weaknesses."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

"Then they used those weaknesses whenever someone challenged them."

One document caught Richard's attention.

He read it carefully.

Then he looked up.

"Who is Sarah Whitmore?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Former regional manager."

"She worked for Holloway Select Markets for twelve years."

"What happened to her?"

Daniel's expression became serious.

"She discovered financial problems."

"She reported them."

"And three weeks later..."

"She was accused of stealing from the company."

Hannah frowned.

"Was she?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

"But the accusation destroyed her reputation."

Richard flipped through the pages.

"Where is she now?"

Daniel looked toward the door.

"She came with me."

Everyone turned.

Standing outside Carter's Table was a woman in her forties.

She looked nervous.

But determined.

Sarah Whitmore entered slowly.

"I wasn't sure I should come."

Evelyn stood.

"You are safe here."

Those simple words nearly broke Sarah.

Because nobody had said them to her in years.

She sat down.

"I spent twelve years building stores for Holloway."

"I worked harder than anyone."

"I believed in the company."

She looked at Hannah.

"Then I learned the truth."

Sarah explained how Grant had manipulated company finances.

How employees were forced to approve suspicious payments.

How managers were instructed to ignore complaints.

"When I refused..."

She swallowed.

"Grant told me I had two choices."

"Approve the documents."

"Or lose everything."

Richard asked,

"What happened?"

Sarah laughed bitterly.

"He chose the third option."

"He destroyed me anyway."

She pulled out her phone.

"I saved everything."

Emails.

Messages.

Recorded conversations.

One recording made everyone silent.

Grant's voice filled the booth.

"You need to understand something, Sarah. People like you are replaceable."

"People like my family are untouchable."

The recording continued.

"If you ever talk about what happens inside this company, I'll make sure nobody believes you."

Nobody spoke after it ended.

Finally, Evelyn said quietly:

"He really believed he could do anything."

Richard nodded.

"That's the problem with people who never face consequences."

"They mistake luck for power."

That afternoon, Richard met privately with Sarah and Daniel.

The evidence was overwhelming.

But he still needed one thing.

A connection.

Something that directly tied Grant to the abuse, the financial crimes, and the intimidation.

Then Sarah remembered something.

"I may have that."

Everyone looked at her.

"Before I was fired, I was asked to organize a meeting."

"Between Grant and his private security team."

Richard leaned forward.

"When?"

"Six months ago."

"What was discussed?"

Sarah opened her laptop.

"I don't know."

"But I was responsible for scheduling the room."

"I found something afterward."

She clicked a folder.

A video file appeared.

The video showed a conference room.

Grant.

Margaret.

Three security executives.

The audio was unclear at first.

Then Grant's voice became obvious.

"If anyone threatens this family, we remove the threat."

Margaret replied:

"Especially people who think they can embarrass us."

Grant leaned closer to the table.

"Money solves most problems."

"Fear solves the rest."

The room went completely silent.

Richard watched the video twice.

Then he closed the laptop.

"This changes everything."

Hannah looked confused.

"Why?"

"Because before this, we had evidence of what happened."

"Now we have evidence of intent."

That evening, Richard prepared an emergency filing.

New evidence.

New witnesses.

New accusations.

But before submitting it, he received one final message.

From Grant Holloway.

Only four words.

You should have stopped.

Richard stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

Now I'm ending this.

Richard showed Evelyn.

She read the words carefully.

Then she looked toward Hannah.

"Are you scared?"

Hannah thought for a moment.

A month ago, the answer would have been yes.

But now...

"No."

Evelyn smiled.

"Why?"

Hannah looked around the diner.

At Tom.

Linda.

Daniel.

Sarah.

At all the people who had chosen to stand beside them.

"Because for the first time..."

"...he's not the only one with power."

Across town, Grant Holloway stood in his office watching the news.

A reporter was standing outside Carter's Table.

Behind her, customers held signs supporting Evelyn and Hannah.

The headline appeared:

"Former Holloway Executives Come Forward With Serious Allegations."

Grant turned off the television.

His reflection stared back at him from the dark screen.

For years, he had believed the Holloway name could protect him from anything.

Now he was learning the truth.

Names could be destroyed.

Fortunes could disappear.

And powerful families could fall.

The seventy-two hours were almost over.

But Grant Holloway had no idea...

The real battle was only beginning.
