Chapter 14: The Hidden Account

Chapter 14: The Hidden Account

The morning after the charity gala, Chicago woke up to a storm.

Not the kind that came from Lake Michigan.

The kind that came from headlines.

Every major news outlet was reporting on the Holloway family's collapse.

The recordings.

The former employees.

The accusations.

The public humiliation inside the very ballroom where Margaret Holloway had spent decades building her reputation.

For the first time in years, the Holloway name was not associated with success.

It was associated with scandal.

Inside the Holloway mansion, Margaret sat at the breakfast table staring at untouched food.

The newspapers were spread in front of her.

Every headline felt like an attack.

Every photograph felt like a betrayal.

Grant entered the room.

He had not slept.

Neither had she.

"We need to leave."

Margaret looked up.

"What?"

"Chicago."

"Temporarily."

She laughed.

A cold, humorless laugh.

"Run?"

Grant's face tightened.

"Survive."

For the first time, Margaret saw something she had never seen in her son.

Fear.

"You are acting like we lost."

Grant looked at her.

"Didn't we?"

The question stunned her.

Because Margaret Holloway had spent her entire life believing losing was impossible.

She had taught Grant that people like them didn't lose.

They negotiated.

They controlled.

They destroyed obstacles.

But now the obstacle had become something they couldn't intimidate.

The truth.

Across town, Carter's Table was busier than ever.

Customers filled every seat.

People who had watched the gala came in just to shake Evelyn's hand.

A woman left flowers on the counter.

A man paid for another customer's breakfast.

A group of firefighters arrived wearing shirts that read:

"STAND WITH EVELYN CARTER."

Hannah smiled while watching them.

"I still can't believe this."

Evelyn poured coffee.

"What?"

"That all these people care."

Evelyn looked around the diner.

"People remember kindness."

"You spent years feeding people."

"Now they're feeding your courage."

But Richard wasn't celebrating.

He sat at the corner booth reviewing documents.

His expression was serious.

Evelyn noticed.

"Something wrong?"

Richard closed the folder.

"Maybe."

Hannah looked concerned.

"What happened?"

"I found something strange."

He placed several financial records on the table.

"During the investigation, we found unusual transfers connected to Holloway Select Markets."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What kind of transfers?"

"Private accounts."

"Offshore accounts."

"Money moved away from the company."

Everyone became quiet.

Sarah looked shocked.

"How much?"

Richard shook his head.

"We don't know yet."

"But it's enough that someone wanted it hidden."

That afternoon, Daniel returned with new information.

"I found the account."

Richard immediately stood.

"Where?"

Daniel opened his laptop.

"It was created six years ago."

"Under a company name that doesn't appear connected to Holloway."

He turned the screen around.

The account holder was hidden behind multiple layers.

But one name appeared in the documents.

Margaret Holloway.

Hannah stared.

"She stole from her own company?"

Daniel nodded.

"Possibly."

Richard studied the records.

"This explains something."

"What?"

"Why she fought so hard to control everything."

"She wasn't just protecting a reputation."

"She was protecting money."

Meanwhile, Grant discovered the same thing.

And this time, he wasn't angry at Evelyn.

He was angry at his mother.

He stormed into Margaret's office.

"What did you do?"

Margaret looked up.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Grant threw the documents onto her desk.

"The hidden account."

Silence.

"You hid company money."

Margaret slowly looked at the papers.

Then she sighed.

"You finally found it."

Grant stared.

"You admit it?"

"I moved money."

"Why?"

"Because someone had to protect this family."

"No."

Grant's voice became colder.

"You protected yourself."

For a moment, Margaret said nothing.

Then she smiled.

A small, dangerous smile.

"You really think you are different from me?"

Grant froze.

"What?"

"You learned everything from me."

"I taught you how this world works."

"No."

Margaret leaned forward.

"You became better at it."

The conversation was interrupted by a phone call.

Grant answered.

His attorney.

"Grant."

"What?"

"We have a serious issue."

"Another one?"

"The financial investigators found the account."

Grant closed his eyes.

"How bad?"

A pause.

"Bad enough that federal authorities may become involved."

For the first time, the possibility became real.

Not lawsuits.

Not bad publicity.

Not angry investors.

Criminal consequences.

That evening, Evelyn sat with Hannah outside the diner.

The city lights reflected on the wet sidewalk.

Hannah was quiet.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Do you ever feel tired?"

Evelyn smiled.

"Of course."

"Then why do you keep going?"

She looked at her daughter.

"Because when I was your age, I promised your father something."

"What?"

"That I would protect you."

Hannah's eyes filled with tears.

"I thought I was protecting you."

Evelyn held her hand.

"You were."

"By surviving."

Later that night, Richard called with an update.

"The investigation is expanding."

Evelyn listened carefully.

"Into Grant?"

"Into the entire Holloway family."

She looked through the window at her diner.

The place she built.

The place they threatened.

The place they failed to destroy.

"What happens now?"

Richard answered honestly.

"Now they fight harder."

Inside the Holloway mansion, Grant packed a suitcase.

Not to run.

Not yet.

But because he no longer knew what tomorrow would bring.

As he walked through the hallway, he passed the family portraits.

His grandfather.

His father.

His younger self.

A legacy built over generations.

And now falling apart because of choices made in secret.

His phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

You are not the only Holloway who has secrets.

Grant stopped.

Slowly, he opened the message.

Attached was a photograph.

A document.

And a name he had not seen in years.

His father's signature.

Grant's expression changed.

Because he realized something terrifying.

The hidden account was only one secret.

The Holloway family had been hiding something much bigger.

May you like

And whoever sent that message...

wanted the world to know.
