Chapter 11: Grant Fights Back

Chapter 11: Grant Fights Back

The Holloway mansion had never felt smaller.

For decades, every room had represented power.

The marble floors.

The priceless artwork.

The enormous windows overlooking the private gardens.

Everything had been designed to send one message:

The Holloways were untouchable.

But now, every room felt like a reminder of what was slipping away.

Grant stood in his father's study watching the latest news coverage.

The reporter's voice filled the room.

"Pressure continues to grow on Holloway Select Markets as former executives and employees come forward with allegations of intimidation and financial misconduct."

Grant grabbed the remote and turned off the television.

The silence afterward was worse.

His phone rang.

Again.

He looked at the screen.

Donovan Pierce.

His attorney.

Grant answered immediately.

"Tell me you have good news."

There was a pause.

That pause annoyed him.

"Donovan?"

"We have a problem."

Grant walked toward the window.

"What kind of problem?"

"The kind that money alone won't solve."

Donovan arrived at the mansion twenty minutes later.

He carried a folder.

Not a thin folder.

A thick one.

Grant noticed.

"What is that?"

"The current damage assessment."

Grant opened it.

Inside were reports from investors.

Supplier concerns.

Public relations analysis.

Legal risks.

His expression hardened.

"This is exaggerated."

"No."

Donovan looked directly at him.

"This is reality."

Grant threw the folder onto the desk.

"We need to attack them."

Donovan sighed.

"That's exactly what I expected you to say."

"Then why are you hesitating?"

"Because every attack you make creates more evidence."

Grant stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

"You threatened Evelyn's business."

"You contacted her suppliers."

"You violated the protection order."

"You sent messages to Hannah."

"Every time you tried to intimidate them, you created proof."

Grant's jaw tightened.

"I was protecting my family."

Donovan shook his head.

"No."

"You were proving their case."

The words angered Grant.

Nobody spoke to him that way.

Not employees.

Not partners.

Not even his own lawyers.

"You were hired to win."

"I was hired to protect you."

Donovan closed the folder.

"Those are not always the same thing."

Meanwhile, at Carter's Table, Richard was preparing for the next stage.

The room had become their unofficial headquarters.

Legal documents covered one booth.

Witness statements filled another.

The little diner that had once been known only for breakfast and coffee had become the place where a billion-dollar family was being challenged.

Linda entered carrying a newspaper.

"Another article."

Richard took it.

The headline read:

"Holloway Investors Demand Answers After Growing Allegations."

Daniel looked worried.

"They're losing control."

Richard nodded.

"Which means they'll become unpredictable."

That afternoon, Hannah received an unexpected letter.

No return address.

No signature.

She immediately became nervous.

"Mom..."

Evelyn walked over.

Richard opened it carefully.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Five words.

You don't know everything.

Everyone exchanged looks.

"What does that mean?" Hannah asked.

Richard examined the paper.

"No fingerprints we can use."

"No information."

"Just fear."

Evelyn frowned.

"From them?"

Richard shook his head.

"Maybe."

"Maybe not."

An hour later, another message arrived.

This time from Sarah Whitmore.

I found something in my old files.

Something about Grant's first marriage.

Everyone became silent.

Grant's first marriage.

Hannah looked confused.

"He was married before me?"

Richard looked at her.

"You didn't know?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Sarah arrived that evening.

She looked uncomfortable.

"I wasn't sure whether this mattered."

Richard opened the folder she brought.

"It matters."

Inside were documents from years earlier.

Grant's first wife.

A woman named Emily Wallace.

The marriage had ended suddenly after only eighteen months.

Publicly, it was described as:

"A private separation between two people who grew apart."

But the documents told another story.

Emily had filed for divorce.

The original complaint included allegations of:

Emotional abuse.

Financial control.

Threats.

Isolation.

Richard read quietly.

Then looked up.

"This is important."

Hannah covered her mouth.

"He did this before."

Sarah nodded.

"Yes."

"And everyone ignored it."

The next morning, Grant received a call.

His private investigator had uncovered the same information.

But the news was not what he expected.

"Sir."

"What?"

"Richard Lawson found Emily Wallace."

Grant froze.

"Where?"

"California."

"She agreed to speak with him."

The color drained from his face.

"No."

The investigator hesitated.

"Sir?"

"You don't understand."

"Emily knows things."

For the first time, Grant wasn't afraid of losing money.

He wasn't afraid of losing the company.

He was afraid of losing control of the story.

Because Emily Wallace represented something dangerous.

A pattern.

A history.

Proof that Hannah was not an exception.

She was another victim.

That afternoon, Grant made a decision.

He called a private meeting with his lawyers.

"I want the strongest defense team in the country."

Donovan looked surprised.

"Grant..."

"I want every attorney."

"Every expert."

"Every resource."

He leaned forward.

"I want them destroyed."

The legal team prepared their response immediately.

They planned counterclaims.

Character attacks.

Financial challenges.

Public relations campaigns.

The strategy was simple:

If they couldn't prove Grant was innocent...

they would make everyone question Hannah.

At Carter's Table, Richard received notice of the new legal filings.

He read them carefully.

Then he smiled.

Evelyn noticed.

"What?"

"They're scared."

Hannah looked confused.

"How can you tell?"

Richard held up the documents.

"Because confident people defend themselves."

"Desperate people attack."

That evening, Grant appeared on television again.

This time, he was not emotional.

He was angry.

"I have remained silent out of respect for my family."

"But false accusations have consequences."

"I will fight to protect my name."

The interviewer asked:

"Are you saying your wife is lying?"

Grant paused.

Then answered:

"I am saying the truth will come out."

At Carter's Table, everyone watched.

Hannah looked at the screen.

The old fear returned for a moment.

"What if people believe him?"

Evelyn placed an arm around her.

"Some people will."

"Some people always believe the person with the loudest voice."

She looked at Richard.

"But eventually..."

"The truth speaks louder."

Later that night, Grant stood alone in the mansion.

He looked at the family portraits again.

His grandfather.

His father.

Him.

Three generations of Holloways.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message from his attorney.

Emily Wallace has agreed to testify.

Grant stared at the words.

His hands tightened.

Because he finally understood something.

The biggest threat was no longer Evelyn Carter.

No longer Hannah.

No longer Richard Lawson.

May you like

The biggest threat was the past.

And the past had just opened its mouth.
